Whatever he touches turns to gold, it would seem.

The Leicester Riders, the London Lions and the Seriös Group Newcastle Eagles – that’s the extent of Josh Ward-Hibbert’s British Basketball League resume.

If you were going to pick three teams to play for in the last 10 years, could you ask for much better in terms of success?

In the Brit’s first season with the Eagles, after trophy-laden spells with Leicester and London, we sat down with JWH to discuss his new challenge and how he hopes to help Marc Steutel take Newcastle back to the top of the tree.

“My first conversation with Marc this summer was very positive,” Ward-Hibbert said.

“I’d heard nothing but good things about him from former teammates and coaches, and my experience with him in that first conversation and since has definitely lived up to that. He’s honest, direct and respectful and together we want to help him build something special here.

“I’ve been very fortunate to play for the biggest teams in this country, joining the most successful team in League history this summer after playing for two other great teams in London and Leicester, and I feel like I’ve earned those opportunities.

“I like to think I have a positive impact on each of the teams I’ve played for and there must be a reason some of the most successful clubs have wanted to have me as part of their rosters.”

Building back better

If anybody stole the headlines this summer, it was the Eagles, who announced blockbuster signings one after the other on what felt like a daily basis – with Ward-Hibbert amongst those amazing acquisitions – after a disappointing 2022/23 campaign.

Some of the biggest stars in recent times of the British Basketball League flocked to Marc Steutel’s nest in Newcastle as the next generation of Eagles became comprised of the likes of Tajh Green, Larry Austin Jr., Jordan Johnson, Rickey McGill and more.

With all of that star power, though, has come some teething problems, as an all-star cast of talent has taken some time to come together, and Ward-Hibbert dissected the team’s progress so far.

“I don’t think people fully appreciate how difficult it is to bring an entirely new team together.” The 29-year-old said.

“Even with three or four changes to a roster there can be growing pains, but we’ve got a whole new roster, so it was always going to take time.

“Marc has had to build a culture and a style of play in no time at all, and we’ve had to learn how to play together in so many different situations for the first time, so with the level of competition there is in the league this year, it was always going to be a process.

“We’ve had a strong couple of weeks in terms of results, but there is so much room for us to improve. We’re only just scratching the surface of what we’re capable of. There’s a special group here and as the season goes on, we’re going to show that more and more, playing our best basketball come Playoff time.”

One of Wimbledon’s finest

As well as being a bucket on the basketball court, Ward-Hibbert was an ace with a racquet in his hand, as the Nottingham native mixed it with some of the best in the world of tennis as a junior player.

Holding the record for the fastest serve at the Wimbledon Junior Championships from 2011 to 2023 – a huge 133mph – the Eagles star routinely traded winners with the likes of Nick Kyrgios, Dominic Theim and others as a youngster.

“I took both sports incredibly seriously, to be honest, and I could have pursued both of them professionally. Tennis was my first sport, and it wasn’t long afterwards that I started basketball, but I have a lot of love for both of them.

“Both have given me incredible life experiences and memories that I’ll cherish forever and there were a lot of transferrable skills between the two as well so my love for one of them definitely helped the other and vice-versa.

“As a junior I was playing against the likes of Nick Kyrgios and Dominic Theim, as well as some of the top British guys on the circuit, and I still keep in contact with a lot of those guys. I still play recreationally now when I get a chance, and have had a game with Will Neighbour – who also played tennis at county level – since we both came to Newcastle.”

Seriös Group Newcastle Eagles have had a rough start to the 2023/24 British Basketball League season. With this in mind, we look at three ways they could change to push themselves back into contention.

Seriös Group Newcastle Eagles have had a rough start to the 2023/23 British Basketball League season. Currently seeing themselves seventh in the standings with a 3-7 record by their names, the Eagles need to change quickly before they slip out of contention.

Expectations became much higher after their incredible offseason acquisitions, which included the likes of Tajh Green, Jordan Johnson, and Larry Austin Jr.

However, this team has not stepped up as many expected, and because of this, we delve deeper into what they could change to take themselves closer to the expectations set at the start of the season.

Hang your Hat on Defence

While the Eagles added some great offensive power in Green, Johnson, and many more, their defence has been struggling through the first 10 games of the season.

While using base stats such as steals and blocks doesn’t tell the whole story, the Eagles are currently dead-last in steals per game and only seventh in blocks per game. If you combine both base stats together, the Eagles are last in the league.

In pre-season, the Newcastle Eagles were touted to be the best defensive team in the league, with Austin and Green being ranked in the top three for most likely to win this season’s Defensive Player of the Year award. Other players such as Johnson and Malcolm Delpeche also received votes.

Going into game week eight, the Eagles had a defensive rating of 112.3, only behind the Plymouth City Patriots and Manchester Giants for worst in the league.

One argument could be made for more minutes for Larry Austin Jr., who has primarily come off the bench this season. However, one easier way to fix their defensive issues is to play riskier regarding fouling.

The Eagles are one of the deepest teams in the league with incredible defensive potential, and if they want to impose their will onto the opposition, they need to be less worried about fouling and trying to get more stops.

Let it Fly

In modern basketball, one thing is for certain: the three-point shot is one of, if not the most vital shot in all of basketball.

We have seen across the pond how dominant teams can become when they embrace the three, and it’s no surprise that the London Lions make the most threes in the league and what their win record is currently.

Newcastle are fifth in three-point percentage in the British Basketball League, but are also ninth in threes attempted.

With only Rickey McGill, Jordan Johnson, and Devin Whitfield making more than one three-pointer per game, more threes need to be taken.

Even if there are some growing pains in a few games, having someone like Will Neighbour, who is one of the rare stretch-fives in the league, should give the Eagles an inherent advantage over many teams.

Though the percentage may drop, it would help to keep the opposition defence honest on the perimeter if the threes attempted jumped up, even just a little bit.

Feed the Big Man

Arguably, Newcastle’s biggest signing was the acquisition of Tajh Green from the Manchester Giants. The big man had a great debut season in the British Basketball League when he averaged 18 points, nine rebounds, and two assists.

Of course, it was expected for those numbers to drop when playing next to all the added talent, but when the going can get tough, it’s best to go back to the basics and ride the superstar.

Only averaging 12.2 points with 7.9 rebounds and 0.7 assists, his numbers have dropped. His best game of the season was arguably in Newcastle’s thriller against the London Lions when the Eagles arguably should have won.

Green had 23 points off 12 shots, and is the only game he’s had this season with over 20 points. The big man needs more than his 9.9 field-goal attempts per game to inflict his will onto the game, and this should be the go-to move when the Eagles are struggling.

Conclusion

It has only been 10 games in the British Basketball League season, and a team like the Newcastle Eagles has all the chances to catch up.

But this team has ways to go, and if things can change for the better, then we will have another contender in the League. If not, this could be a rough year for Eagles fans.

Paul James, Head Coach of the Plymouth City Patriots, has finally achieved his 500th win as a Head Coach in the British Basketball League after beating the London Lions.

Head Coach of the Plymouth City Patriots and British Basketball League legend Paul James has finally logged his 500th win in charge as a Head Coach in the British Basketball League.

This monumental win came after his Patriots beat the London Lions by the score of 94-70 on November 5, 2023.

After overcoming a seven-game loss streak, the Patriots played the role of David perfectly against the Goliath of the British Basketball League in the London Lions. Taylor Johnson was Paul James’ star player in the win over the Lions, with the guard scoring 24 points on 8-of-11 shooting.

James was made the inaugural head coach of the Patriots in August 2021, ahead of their first season as a new franchise. Prior to his role with the Patriots, James had coached the likes of the Plymouth Raiders, the England national team, Worcester Wolves, Guildford Heat, and Thames Valley Tigers.

In a coaching career that has spanned nearly 20 years, James has been at the forefront of Plymouth Basketball for over five years.

The head coach of the Plymouth City Patriots had this to say about reaching the 500-win milestone:

“It hasn’t really sunk in yet; my focus was just on getting another win. The guys have been working exceptionally hard since they got here, and we’ve been getting better all the time. We’ve had to change a few things up, and it just clicked tonight against London.”

In his three years as head coach of the Patriots, James has a combined record of 25-54 and has been instrumental in their addition to the British Basketball League and their rise throughout its standings.

The Patriots are now 2-10 in the 2023/24 British Basketball League season, with their two wins against the Lions and B. Braun Sheffield Sharks.

The Sheffield Sharks protected their home court in the British Basketball League and defeated the Manchester Giants 92-73.

With this win, the Sharks improved to a record of 6-5, while the Giants dropped to 2-8.

Starting Five:

Sheffield Sharks starting five: Devearl Ramsey, Jalon Pipkins, Kipper Nichols, Jordan Ratinho, Bennett Koch,

Manchester Giants starting five: Jalen Harris, Nick Stampley, Jamell Anderson, Mason Bourcier, Austin Lawton

First Half:

The game started with the two teams neck and neck, exchanging baskets and the lead for the first seven minutes.

That’s when Sheffield went on an 11-0 run, capped off by a three-pointer from Parker Stewart, giving them a nine-point advantage (25-16).

The final minute of the first quarter and the start of the second belonged to Manchester, who went on an 11-0 run of their own, to take the lead 25-27.

Despite the momentum being firmly on the side of the visitors who had managed to retake the lead, the Sharks managed to gradually build up a small lead once more, going up by as many as eight points on the back of two made free throws by Jordan Ratinho.

The final minutes of the half saw the teams exchange baskets, with the hosts going into the break ahead 44-38.

Second Half:

With the start of the second half, Sheffield quickly gained control of the game, rushing to their first double-digit lead of the game (52-41), when Devearl Ramsey connected from downtown.

The home side kept on top of their opponents and increased their advantage to as many as 20 points (66-46), three minutes before the end of the third quarter when Kipper Nichols scored a layup.

The final three minutes of the period saw the two teams exchange buckets, with the Sharks taking a commanding 17-point lead (71-54) going into the final 10 minutes of action.

Sheffield stayed in control for the entire fourth period, leading by as many as 24 (82-58), following a Stewart three-pointer.

Manchester didn’t give up and went on a 8-0 run of their own to close the gap to 16 (82-66), with Darius Mcneill twice managing to breeze through the Sheffield defence, which didn’t please Coach Lyons.

The final few minutes saw the hosts control the tempo of the game and come out on top 92-73.

Player of the Game:

Tonight’s Player of the Game was Parker Stewart. The Sheffield Sharks guard came off the bench and in 20 minutes of action scored 19 points, grabbed five rebounds and dished out one assist.

The B. Braun Sheffield Sharks have announced the signing of Prentiss Nixon for the remainder of the 2023-24 British Basketball League season.

The 26-year-old forward, hailing from Bolingbrook, Illinois, United States, brings his talents and international experience to the Sharks’ line-up, strengthening the team’s prospects in competitive league play.

Nixon played for the Colorado State Rams and Iowa State Cyclones during his collegiate career. After graduation, Nixon had stints with Aanekosken Huima in Finland 1st Division (24.9 pts, 7 rebs, 4.6 ast), and MBC Mykolaiv in Ukraine Superleague (10.5 pts, 3.8 rebs, 2.8 ast).

Last season, Prentiss competed in the Latvian Estonian Basketball League with BK Ogre, where he averaged 7.8 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 2.6 assists.

Expressing his excitement about joining the Sheffield Sharks and competing in the British Basketball League, Nixon stated,

I am excited to get to Sheffield and for the opportunity to play in the British League. I think I can add energy to the Sharks’ roster. It seems like an exciting time to be a Shark with the new arena and the direction the league is headed.”

Head Coach Atiba Lyons also expressed his enthusiasm about Walton’s addition to the team,

“Prentiss will definitely bring experience and a dynamic skill set at the guard slot that will enhance our performance.

“His ability to create opportunities for himself and others will be key. We look forward to welcoming him to Sheffield.”

The addition of Nixon sees the Sharks part ways with Terrell Allen. The club would like to thank Terrell for his time and efforts with the team and wish him all the best in his future endeavours.

With the London Lions going unbeaten in October in the British Basketball League, Molten Player of the Month honours were secured by none other than their star guard, Matt Morgan, after a string of incredible performances for the defending champions.

In the seven games the Lions have played in October against the likes of the Serios Group Newcastle Eagles, Surrey Scorchers, B. Braun Sheffield Sharks, Cheshire Phoenix, and Manchester Giants, Morgan has been a focal point for the Lions’ success.

Player of the Month

The Player of the Month for October in the British Basketball League has gone to Matt Morgan of the Lions.

Morgan has had an electrifying start to his career in the British Basketball League, joining the Lions from Le Mans of the French Pro A League on July 20, 2023.

The American guard has lit up the League and has been incredible for the Lions in October, averaging 22.3 points, three assists, and 3.3 rebounds on shooting splits of 60/50/88 over six games in Octo

ber.

The Stats

Starting off the month of October, Morgan produced two incredible performances, going back-to-back with 30+ point games.

On October 1, the American guard blew up for 33 points on only 15 shots, while grabbing eight rebounds, and going a perfect 9-for-9 from the free-throw line on the road to the Cheshire Phoenix.

Arguably Morgan’s best game of the month was the heroic comeback he led against the Eagles on October 16, where the sharpshooter went 9-for-13 from the three-point line to log 30 points in an overtime victory

Averaging 22.3 points, three assists, and 6.7 rebounds on shooting splits of 60/50/88, Morgan has been the undoubted star for the London Lions, especially with Sam Dekker returning slowly to full health.

Due to this incredible month for the American guard, Morgan has scooped Molten Player of the Month honours for October.

In game week seven of the British Basketball League, fans were able to witness recent history in the league.

The Leicester Riders overcame a gargantuan task, beating the Surrey Scorchers after seeing themselves down by as much as 23 points in the game.

In what looked like would be a routine win for the Scorchers, we delve deep into how the Riders were able to pull off this herculean task and overcome the biggest deficit and win in recent British Basketball League history.

Where the Lead Came From

The Surrey Scorchers have become one of the most in-form teams in the past few weeks of the British Basketball League.

Notching their first win of the season against the Manchester Giants in game week six of the League, the Scorchers were also able to win their game after the Riders, beating the Plymouth City Patriots.

The Scorchers started off incredibly hot in their game with the Leicester Riders, jumping off to a 28-12 lead by the end of the first quarter.Surrey’s shooting from beyond the arc has been the talk of the league.

Currently averaging the most makes and attempts from three, with 10.9 makes and 33.6 attempts per game, their shooting was once again showing to be the difference maker.

The 16-point lead by the end of the first quarter primarily came from their shooting, going 5-of-9 from beyond the arc. Their defence was also fully on display, grabbing five steals and holding the Riders to 5-of-20 shooting.

Their 23-point lead came midway through the second quarter after an absurd Saiquan Jamison three-pointer, the first in his British Basketball League career, went through the basket and saw themselves up 43-20.

How They Came Back

With five minutes to go in the second quarter, it’s remarkable that the Riders were able to make it a 45-36 game by the end of it.

Their defence went into lockdown with Miryne Thomas commanding the paint, but also the likes of Kimbal Mackenzie and Conner Washington locking down the perimeter while adding crucial baskets themselves.

The veteran duo on the perimeter seemed to be the catalyst to start this comeback, but even a nine-point lead is still quite comfortable in basketball terms. It’s what came in the third quarter that was truly remarkable.

Starting the second half and third quarter, Thomas and point guard Xavier Pinson knew what they had to do.

Pinson went into overdrive, constantly attacking the paint, picking up fouls, and scoring consistently. The young guard has been in MVP conversations this season, and this performance will only further those talks.

Thomas continued his defensive ways as he showed in the second quarter, while also scoring from everywhere on the court to retrieve the lead.

Taking their first lead of the game with 6:33 left in the third quarter, Thomas hit the three that took them into the lead again.

What This Means

By the end of the third quarter, the Riders were ahead by three points and had destroyed the dreams of the Scorchers grabbing a win over them and snapping a 12-year streak without a win.

This win for the Riders could ultimately push them far this season and could be the turning point for their season.

After some questionable games against the likes of the Newcastle Eagles and Manchester Giants, the Riders looked like legitimate contenders. Their guard rotation is arguably one of the best in the league, if not the best.

Miryne Thomas is starting to show he is also one of the best big men in the league. The rookie has really started to carve out his role in recent games, picking up multiple Player of the Game awards while scoring 13.3 points and grabbing 6.4 rebounds.

The Leicester Riders could be one of the best teams in the league and one of the most likely teams to knock the London Lions off their perch at the top, but they will need to capitalise on this historic moment to continue.

Moore scored with two seconds left as Caledonia edged Leicester 84-83 at PlaySport on Sunday evening.

Kimbal MacKenzie had the chance to sneak the visitors over the line, but his attempt missed the mark.

Patrick Whelan led the winners with 24 points.

Caledonia Gladiators starting five: Ian Dubose, Prince Onwas, Patrick Whelan,

Leicester Riders starting five: Miryne Thomas, Xavier Pinson, Caleb Asberry, Jaren Holmes, Braelen Bridges, Fahro Alihodzic.

First Half

With the main talking point being Whelan’s first game against his old club, the question was how he would approach the game.

The answer was aggressive. The Great Britain international hit an awkward jumper from the top as the shot clock expired, along with getting to the foul line as the Gladiators built up a 24-16 cushion with 3:08 left in the first.

But the Riders fought back, and a 12-2 finish to the quarter, highlighted by a four-point play from Conner Washington, stole the lead from the hosts.

Washington was able to connect on two three-pointers in the early stages of the second, as Leicester kept their stranglehold on the game.

However, Caledonia were threatening and, despite trailing for most of the second period, finally tied things up at 44-44 on the half-time horn as Clifton Moore Jr. connected.

Second Half

Moore’s buzzer-beater ignited a flame within Caledonia as they came out the blocks on a 12-2 stretch, capped by a triple from Lukas Palyza that saw them lead 58-48.

Riders were unable to execute offensively as they were in danger of fading away. Under adversity, Leicester hit back as Caledonia were defensively caught napping and as the third quarter concluded, Blake Bowman was able to hit to narrow the gap to 67-63.

The fourth quarter was nip-and-tuck with the biggest lead for either team only being three points and emotions pouring.

It was all about who could hold their nerve when it matters most.

Whelan got the crowd of 1,200 on its feet with a three-pointer to give the Gladiators an 82-81 lead with 30 seconds left, only for MacKenzie to answer with a pull-up jumper.

The stage was then set for Moore – who only had one field goal at the time – to shine. And he delivered.

Bowman led Leicester with 15 points.

Player of the Game

Against his old club, Patrick Whelan put the Riders to the sword with 24 points and was able to grab today’s Player of the Game.
