On October, 20th 2023, up and coming soul music artist, Ol’ June, released his third single with the sophisticated sound of “Cruisin”. On “Cruisin”, Ol’ June’s voice is reminiscent of Marvin Gaye. His tone and ability to hold beautiful notes is only matched by his vocal range and seemingly effortless breath control. He layers his own background harmonies like a veteran. This song is written by Ol’ June, whose birth name is Julian Wilcoxson; with music production by Antoine Franklin. Ol’ June’s vocal performance is flawless as he sings about love, hope and compassion for his people. While this song may seem like just another smooth groove, it does speak to social injustice and encouragement for social change. In a world where today’s R&B music I lacking in heart and soul, “Cruisin” delivers what true soul music should sound like. Ol’ June is the beginning of a resurgence of pure soul music.
When asked about what inspired him to write “Cruisin”, he responded “When I first heard Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On” I thought to myself, what has changed since 1971? Although I was not even born, the same trials exist. Similarly, when I heard , “Someday We’ll All Be Free” by Donny Hathaway, my people in 2023 are still not free and being disregarded and abused. In “Cruisin”, I expand upon how these subjects are still relevant today. Socially charged and aggressive, “Cruisin” displays the pain of being a black person in 2023.”
