LOS ANGELES, CALIF.) – January 17, 2023 – Humor Mill, the leading digital entertainment company for comedy news, announces the launch of its inaugural awards show dedicated to recognizing comics of the past, present and future on Tuesday, February 21 at The Directors Guild of America (DGA). The Humor Mill Comedy Awards is set to roll out a star-studded line-up of comedic co-hosts including BET’s Real Husbands of Hollywood Executive Producer Chris Spencer and Detroit Comedian Tony T. Roberts. The unforgettable night will feature thrilling behind-the-scenes footage from social media correspondent Juhahn Jones, special tributes, surprise moments, and non-stop laughter for a celebratory night of acknowledging comedians across television, film and digital platforms.

The Humor Mill Comedy Awards was curated to recognize the vibrant world of comedy, including seasoned comedians and the rise of social media stars who have achieved widespread fame on platforms like Vine, TikTok and Instagram with the rise of online comedy. The live-to-tape production will honor a blend of veteran comics who have paved the way and emerging social influencers who are carving a new lane. The migration from traditional stand-up comedy to social media stardom has shifted the comedic landscape leading to an explosion of creativity, content and exposure for comedic artists.

“Comedy has undergone a significant evolution and has become more mainstream and widely consumed,” says Humor Mill Founder Frank Holder. “Despite the tireless efforts of comedians, the recognition they receive is not always commensurate with the hard work, resulting in only a select few becoming well-known names. The Humor Mill Comedy Awards aims to bring urban comedy to the forefront and give proper recognition by introducing new voices to the world and honoring those who have made lasting contributions.”

The Humor Mill network includes a rolodex of outlets including its website, digital magazine, internet radio and cable broadcast channels with a boasting reach of over 4 million households serving as a launchpad for iconic comedians in the early stages of their careers who are now dominating box office numbers and breaking records in TV and film. The urban platform has cultivated a landing spot to introduce audiences to Black Hollywood household names as well as newcomers providing laughter, healing and comfort.

Scheduled to take place during the third week of Black History Month, the show aims to amplify the voices of the African-American diaspora, taking audiences through relatable, personal and funny comedy, particularly at a time when Black culture and their stories are being told.

Ticket availability and additional details for the live-taping event will be later announced.

The jury in Bill Cosby’s retrial found the TV icon guilty of all three counts of aggravated indecent assault on Thursday for drugging and sexually assaulting Andrea Constand at his home in a Philadelphia suburb in 2004.

The 80-year-old comedian faces up to 10 years in prison on each count, but is likely to serve them concurrently. A sentencing hearing has not yet been scheduled, and he remains out on bail.

Cosby did not have an audible reaction to his conviction, but erupted shortly afterward. Minutes after the verdict, prosecutors asked the judge to revoke Cosby’s bail because they say he is a flight risk and has a private plane.

Cosby, who did not testify in the trial and has sat quietly throughout the proceedings, then stood up and yelled in a loud, booming voice: “He doesn’t have a plane, you asshole.”

Judge Steven O’Neill ruled that Cosby should not leave his Pennsylvania home, and that he would need to be fitted with a GPS tracking device.

The case was the first celebrity sexual assault trial since the #MeToo movement began last fall, and as such, represented a test of how the cultural movement translates into a courtroom arena.

Did comedian/actor John Witherspoon suffer a stroke while onstage at the Kansas City Improv Friday night (01-12-18)?

In the video taken by an audience member (@akadmiks) shows Witherspoon telling the fellow comedians on stage that something was wrong while yelling out to the audience not to worry and that he’d be back on stage.

In the meantime, here’s some very interesting history about the comedian that you might not know.

You probably remember John Witherspoon as Ice Cube’s (Craig’s) outrageously funny, dog-catching dad in New Line Cinema”s smash urban trilogy Friday, Next Friday & Friday After Next, or as “Pops” on the long-running syndicated sitcom “The Wayans Brothers” or as “Spoon” on NBC”s “The Tracy Morgan Show.” One thing”s for sure, once you”ve seen Witherspoon you completely understand why he has earned the reputation as one of America”s funniest dads.

Witherspoon has brought to life some of the most hilarious, unforgettable characters ever including, David Allen Grier”s fashionably challenged, mushroom-wearing father in the romantic comedy Boomerang, and the quirky, diner-owning father “Pops” on The WB”s “The Wayans Brothers.” His scene-stealing roles in Boomerang, Little Nicky, House Party, Vampire in Brooklyn, and I”m Gonna Git You Sucka, made him one of the most memorable funny men in America.

You”ve seen him in everything from popular music videos alongside Jay Z and Sugar Ray —to sitcoms opposite “The Wayans Brothers” and “Saturday Night Live”s,” Tracy Morgan —to blockbuster movies alongside Eddie Murphy, Adam Sandler, Chris Tucker and Ice Cube, amongst others. Not only does Witherspoon”s work span over four decades to include blockbuster movies, hit-television shows, commercials, and top-rated music videos, but he”s coined his own catch phrases”as in “Bang!Bang!Bang!Bang!” and “You Gotta Co-ordinate!”

You have to wonder how a comedian whose work can be traced back as far as “WKRP in Cincinnati” and “Barnaby Jones,” can still be relevant today. His roles in the Friday series, (Friday, Next Friday, Friday After Next), Soul Plane, Ladies Man, Boomerang, Vampire in Brooklyn, Little Nicky, House Party, etc. are arguably some of the most hilarious bits of comedy to date. The Orange County Register describes the comedian/actor as being in a class of his own. “Witherspoon is one of those performers who doesn”t need a funny line to be funny. Just standing there in a truculent posture with a suspicious look, he is funny and enlivens every scene he”s in.” The Detroit-bred comic has proven that he is a Hollywood mainstay and continues to land coveted spots in some of America”s favorite movies and television shows

In his new Netflix comedy special, Dave Chappelle says that one of the five women who accused fellow comedian Louis C.K. of sexual misconduct in a November New York Times article has a “brittle-ass spirit” for alleging that his conduct helped dissuade her from pursuing comedy as a career.

Chappelle addresses the recent spate of sexual harassment and assault allegations in Hollywood in the opening to The Bird Revelation, the second part of his Netflix special Dave Chappelle: Equanimity & the Bird Revelation, which premiered New Year’s Eve. It was taped in late November at the Comedy Store in Los Angeles.

“Here we are, Los Angeles, the real capital of rape and dick breath,” Chappelle tells the audience in his opening remarks. “They got Charlie Rose today…Who’s next, Captain Kangaroo?”

After Chappelle jokes about allegations against Harvey Weinstein and Kevin Spacey, he spends over 10 minutes addressing sexual misconduct allegations against Louis C.K. He says the allegations against C.K. — many of which involve him masturbating in front of other women — were a “turning point” for him, because his actions were the only ones in the recent series of allegations that made Chappelle “laugh.”

“It’s terrible, I know, it’s terrible. I’m sorry, ladies, you’re right. You are right,” Chappelle says. “At the same time, you know what I mean, I mean, Jesus Christ, I don’t know, they took everything from Louis, it might be disproportionate, I can’t tell, I can’t tell, this is like where it’s hard to be a man.”

Chappelle continues by addressing the allegations of Abby Schachner, a former comedian who claimed that Louis C.K. masturbated while on a phone call with her in 2003 in a November story in The New York TimesThe Times reported that though the comedian apologized, the experience left Schachner “deeply dispirited” and that his conduct was “one of the things that discouraged her from pursuing comedy.”

Dave Chappelle speaks on June 14, 2015 in Washington, DC.

Chappelle mentions Schachner’s story twice in his sexual harassment bit. “One lady said, ‘Louis C.K. masturbated in front of me, ruined my comedy dreams,'” he says. “Word?’ Well then I dare say, madam, you may have never had a dream. Come on man, that’s a brittle spirit. That is a brittle-ass spirit, that is too much, this grown-ass woman.”

Chappelle says that if Louis C.K. had masturbated in front of civil-rights icon Martin Luther King, he doubts that King would have dropped his “dream.” “Show business is just harder than that,” he continues. “I know that sounds fucked up, I’m not supposed to say that, but one of these ladies was like, ‘Louis C.K .was masturbating while I was on the phone with him.’ Bitch, you don’t know how to hang up a phone? How the fuck are you going to survive in show business if this is an actual obstacle to your dreams?”

Chappelle has previously released two other comedy specials on Netflix.

WASHINGTON —

Dick Gregory, the comedian and activist and who broke racial barriers in the 1960s and used his humor to spread messages of social justice and nutritional health, has died. He was 84.

Gregory died late Saturday in Washington, D.C. after being hospitalized for about a week, his son Christian Gregory told The Associated Press. He had suffered a severe bacterial infection.

As one of the first black standup comedians to find success with white audiences, in the early 1960s, Gregory rose from an impoverished childhood in St. Louis to win a college track scholarship and become a celebrated satirist who deftly commented upon racial divisions at the dawn of the civil rights movement.

“Where else in the world but America,” he joked, “could I have lived in the worst neighborhoods, attended the worst schools, rode in the back of the bus, and get paid $5,000 a week just for talking about it?”

Gregory’s sharp commentary soon led him into civil rights activism, where his ability to woo audiences through humor helped bring national attention to fledgling efforts at integration and social equality for blacks.

//platform.instagram.com/en_US/embeds.js

Democratic Sen. Cory Booker of New Jersey tweeted, “Dick Gregory’s unflinching honesty & courage, inspired us to fight, live, laugh & love despite it all.” A tweet by actress/comedian Whoopi Goldberg said, “About being black in America Dick Gregory has passed away, Condolences to his family and to us who won’t have his insight 2 lean on R.I.P”

Gregory briefly sought political office, running unsuccessfully for mayor of Chicago in 1966 and U.S. president in 1968, when he got 200,000 votes as the Peace and Freedom party candidate. In the late ’60s, he befriended John Lennon and was among the voices heard on Lennon’s anti-war anthem “Give Peace a Chance,” recorded in the Montreal hotel room where Lennon and Yoko Ono were staging a “bed-in” for peace.

An admirer of Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr., Gregory embraced nonviolence and became a vegetarian and marathon runner.

He preached about the transformative powers of prayer and good health. Once an overweight smoker and drinker, he became a trim, energetic proponent of liquid meals and raw food diets. In the late 1980s, he developed and distributed products for the popular Slim-Safe Bahamian Diet.

When diagnosed with lymphoma in 2000, he fought it with herbs, exercise and vitamins. It went in remission a few years later.

He took a break from performing in comedy clubs, saying the alcohol and smoke in the clubs were unhealthy and focused on lecturing and writing more than a dozen books, including an autobiography and a memoir.

Gregory went without solid food for weeks to draw attention to a wide range of causes, including Middle East peace, American hostages in Iran, animal rights, police brutality, the Equal Rights Amendment for women and to support pop singer Michael Jackson when he was charged with sexual molestation in 2004.

“We thought I was going to be a great athlete, and we were wrong, and I thought I was going to be a great entertainer, and that wasn’t it either. I’m going to be an American Citizen. First class,” he once said.

Richard Claxton Gregory was born in 1932, the second of six children. His father abandoned the family, leaving his mother poor and struggling. Though the family often went without food or electricity, Gregory’s intellect and hard work quickly earned him honors, and he attended the mostly white Southern Illinois University.

“In high school I was fighting being broke and on relief,” he wrote in his 1963 book. “But in college, I was fighting being Negro.”

He started winning talent contests for his comedy, which he continued in the Army. After he was discharged, he struggled to break into the standup circuit in Chicago, working odd jobs as a postal clerk and car washer to survive. His breakthrough came in 1961, when he was asked to fill in for another comedian at Chicago’s Playboy Club. His audience, mostly white Southern businessmen, heckled him with racist gibes, but he stuck it out for hours and left them howling.

That job was supposed to be a one-night gig, but lasted two months — and landed him a profile in Time magazine and a spot on “The Tonight Show.”

Vogue magazine, in February 1962, likened him to Will Rogers and Fred Allen: “bright and funny and topical … (with) a way of making the editorials in The New York Times seem the cinch stuff from which smash night-club routines are rightfully made.” ”I’ve got to go up there as an individual first, a Negro second,” he said in Phil Berger’s book, “The Last Laugh: The World of Stand-up Comics.” ”I’ve got to be a colored funny man, not a funny colored man.”

His political passions were never far from his mind — and they hurt his comedy career. The nation was grappling with the civil rights movement, and it was not at all clear that racial integration could be achieved. At protest marches, he was repeatedly beaten and jailed.

He remained active on the comedy scene until recently, when he fell ill and canceled an August 9 show in San Jose, California, followed by an August 15 appearance in Atlanta. On social media, he wrote that he felt energized by the messages from his well-wishers, and said he was looking to get back on stage because he had a lot to say about the racial tension brought on by the gathering of hate groups in Virginia.

“We have so much work still to be done, the ugly reality on the news this weekend proves just that,” he wrote.

He is survived by his wife, Lillian, and 10 children.
