The 2018 MTV Video Music Awards returned to Radio City Music Hall in New York City and tbh, we’re still shook after watching our favorite celebs slay the red carpet and stage.

Your girl Cardi B opened the show with an exciting reveal of what we thought was her adorable baby, but turned out to be…..her moon person for Song of Summer, but the Bronx native went on to snag awards for Best New Artist and Best Collab later in the night. Shawn Mendes’ dripping performance of “In My Blood” had us sweating, Logic brought people facing immigration issues up on stage with him during “One Day,” and Panic! At The Disco had us dancing during “High Hopes.”

Best Hip Hop Winner Nicki Minaj proved she really is a queen, while Best Pop Winner Ariana Grande showed us that God is a woman. 2018 Video Vanguard honoree Jennifer Lopez had us speechless with her medley of classics complete with flawless choreography and appearances from Ja Rule and DJ Khaled. Travis Scott brought ASTROWORLD to the VMA stage and MALUMA stunned the world with a surprising kiss on stage.
Camila Cabello emerged as one of the biggest winners of the night sweeping Artist of the Year and Video of the Year. To finish off the night, Post Malone performed the VMA Song of the Year “rockstar” with 21 Savage and collaborating with AEROSMITH.

The confusion over whether rapper Childish Gambino and actor/comedian Donald Glover are two different people continues, this time baffling Cardi B.

Last week, in a now-deleted tweet, the Invasion of Privacy rapper seemingly made an astute observation before quickly realizing she was incorrect.

“It’s amazing how Donald Glover and Childish Gambino look soo much alike. I think they secretly the same person!!! Soo dope!!’” Cardi wrote Thursday (May 24).

A few minutes later, she added, “Wait, I’m confuse now.”

It’s uncertain whether Cardi was making a joke or being serious. Either way, her comments about Gambino and Glover — who are the same person, for the record — inspired some of her social media followers to share their own experiences with the matter.

“The movie hasn’t started yet but there’s no way any part of Solo is going to be better than the guy LOSING HIS MIND outside the theater realizing Childish Gambino and Donald Glover are the same person,” one Twitter user wrote, referencing Glover’s role as Lando Calrissian in the latest Star Wars film, Solo.

And Cardi, just so you know, Donald Glover isn’t the son of veteran Lethal Weapon actor Danny Glover.

Is Atlanta the best comedy on TV? Or the best drama? The best family saga about the impossibility of either fatherhood or son-hood? The funniest crime story? The most depressive stoner romp? The most anti-romantic love letter to a city? The most absurdist state-of-the-nation report, in the form of a deeply black, deeply American, deeply 2018 chronicle of how the urge to work can sabotage all the other urges? As Donald Glover steps up his already-stunning game on the second season of his groundbreaking FX hit, it’s all these things and more. Simply “the best show on TV” will have to do.

Atlanta is Glover’s brainchild – he stars as Earnest “Earn” Marks, a guy who went to Princeton, dropped out, wound up broke and desperate back home in Atlanta. Now he struggles to get over by managing his cousin Alfred, a rapper who goes by the nom du hip-hop Paper Boi (the superb Brian Tyree Henry). Earn can’t catch a break whatever he does – the whole world stunts on him, whether he’s trying to get a good night’s sleep in a storage unit or live large at the strip club. He’s got a kid with his off-and-on girlfriend Vanessa (Zazie Beetz), but he feels like a failure at both roles. And the whole city has gone dark on him: It’s “Robbin’ Season,” the time when the crime rate rises right before everybody needs cash at Christmas.

The show’s second season is in the tradition of classic hip-hop second albums like De La Soul Is Dead or Kanye’s Late Registration – having spent the first season overflowing with creative ebullience, eccentric yet crowd-pleasing, the second chapter swerves hard into the grim. Glover has often called Atlanta Twin Peaks for rappers,” and this season definitely enters the Black Lodge. There are tense and abrupt moments where violence is in the air; the emotional conflicts get even crueler. Paper Boi has become a ghetto superstar, but now he’s got the burden of local rap notoriety without the checks to go with it. In one perfect scene, he stares at his phone, watching in horror as a suburban white girl named Amber with a guitar sings her version of “Paper Boi” on YouTube. “An acoustic rap cover,” Darius explains. “Them white girls love that shit.”

There’s still the kind of sweetly zonked stoner comedy in a parking-lot philosophy question like “What flavor is a Flaming Hot Cheeto?” – if that’s all Glover had wanted to achieve with Atlanta, that would have been plenty. But after seeing how much weird dankness he got away with the first time, he’s aiming even higher now. There’s a funny moment where he listens to a small-time criminal operator go off about a certain cartoon horseman: “I mean, don’t get me wrong, it’s a funny show, but the way they dive into depression, and especially after what he did to her daughter, I was like can I even feel bad for this horse anymore?!” Like Bojack Horseman,Earn struggles with his own depression, but also he also has to negotiate the depression piled up all over the city and its history. He’s between different worlds and not really at home in any of them, as in the moment when he tries to defuse a stand-off between the cops and his uncle – beautifully played by stand-up comic Katt Williams as a crotchety old man who keeps an alligator in the bathtub.

Many of us became huge Donald Glover fans when he was on Dan Harmon’s Community – but at this point, Community barely even makes his top ten career highlights. As the obsessive science-fiction geek Troy, Glover had a great Community moment in the episode about their model U.N. – he’s the representative from Georgia, adopting a cartoonish Southern accent and hamming it up. He gets testy when anyone points out it’s supposed to be the Georgia that’s a country in Eastern Europe. When the model U.N. votes on a resolution, Glover smiles sweetly and drawls, “Georgia – the country – is much obliiiiiged.” The easily overlooked tension in that moment all comes out in Atlanta – his relationship with his home state, like Earn’s relationship with his family, is a source of creative rage and pain. But as Glover keeps proving on Atlanta, he’s just getting more restless and ambitious all the time. The best might be yet to come.

The best TV shows to watch this March – from the return of ‘Atlanta’ and the final season of ‘The Americans’ to a rebooted Trump-era ‘Roseanne.’

All eyez on Donald Glover.

The dapper actor-rapper-director graces the latest cover of Esquire. During the interview, he opens up about the upcoming season of “Atlanta” and compares himself to another beloved MC-thespian. “I know everybody likens themselves to Tupac a lot,” he said. “I am the new Tupac in a strange way.”

The Grammy winner went on to explain why he sees so many similarities between himself and Tupac Shakur. “I grew up similar,” he added. “I didn’t have a mom in the Black Panthers, but my parents were very pro-black. Also, my mom made me go to performing-arts high school. She was like, ‘That’s where you need to be.’ Sometimes you have to play a role for people to understand you, even though you’re far more complex than any of that. Sometimes it’s really hard to simplify that so people can eat it.”

He is far from the first rapper to compare himself to Tupac. Recently, Troy Ave and Boosie Badazz made similar comparisons, and XXXTentacion even said he is better than the late icon.

Glover, who recently welcomed his second child, is currently working on a new album. That project is said to be Gambino’s last, though it is unclear whether he plans on retiring from music entirely, or simply from releasing material under the Childish moniker.

He is also prepping for the upcoming second season of “Atlanta,” dubbed “Robbin’ Season,” which premieres March 1 on FX. “I know season two of ‘Atlanta’ is something because it makes me nervous,” he added

Childish Gambino — a.k.a. actor/singer/rapper and”Atlanta” star Donald Glover — and his agency/label Wolf + Rothstein have partnered with RCA Records for a new recording and label deal. New music from Gambino, who is nominated in multiple categories at the upcoming Grammy Awards, is expected via Wolf + Rothstein/RCA Records.

“Donald is undoubtedly one of the most talented, multi-faceted, young entertainers of this era,” said RCA Chairman/CEO Peter Edge of the signing. “We are excited to join forces with him and Wolf + Rothstein to usher in the next phase of Childish Gambino’s musical career.”

Added Glover: “It was a necessary change of pace.

Based in Temple Studios in Los Angeles, Wolf + Rothstein is the creative agency comprised of Glover, Wolf Taylor, and Fam Rothstein, all whom worked with the band that helped create the “Awaken My Love!” album, which, along with the single “Redbone,” are nominated for five Grammy Awards: Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Best Traditional R&B Performance, Best R&B Song, and Best Urban Contemporary Album.

“Awaken My Love!” and Gambino’s two prior albums were released through GlassNote Records; execs from the company spoke with Variety last year about the campaign to make “Redbone” a hit single. The song finished out 2017 at No. 20 on BuzzAngle Music’s most consumed songs chart.

Childish Gambino is set to perform at the 60th Grammy Awards on January 28.

As a label, Wolf + Rothstein also released two projects in 2016: Kari Faux’s “Lost en Los Angeles,” which had several songs featured in Issa Rae’s hit HBO series “Insecure,” and Black Party’s “Mango.” The company will be partnering with Kobalt for publishing.

“Being malleable is important to us, and that’s what this partnership allows. Also, it was about that time,” Fam Rothstein said. Julian K. Petty, Partner, Nixon Peabody LLP adds: “This partnership is a real commitment to artistry and the future of music. I’m happy I could play a small part in helping put it together.”

After a summer spent explaining why he would be retiring his Childish Gambino alias, then performing with said alias during a joint show with Dave Chappelle, it only makes sense that Donald Glover would sign on to perform live during the 60th Grammys show, which airs live on CBS on Jan. 28. Glover is joining a group of performers that includes Lady Gaga, Pink, and Little Big Town.

The question is, what will he be performing? The obvious choice would be “Redbone,” which went double platinum over the summer and was featured in Jordan Peele’s hit horror film Get Out. Or he could be choosing to play “Me and Your Mama,” which was the lead single from Awaken, My Love! With five Grammy nominations to his name this year, Glover could be down to do anything.

Either way, it’s going to be a highlight to a night that could be another notch in Glover’s belt.

It’s been a long time since we last visited Donald Glover‘s specific, surreal vision of Atlanta.

But the highly-anticipated second season of the Emmy-winning FX comedy, officially titled Atlanta Robbin’ Season (more on that later), finally has a premiere date of March 1. And because the return is right around the corner, the multi-hyphenate (Seriously, not only does he star in the series he created, but he is also credited as executive producer, director, writer and executive music producer. Whew.) and his co-stars were on hand during FX’s day at the 2018 TCA Winter Press Tour to give the world some insight into what it’s like to return to something that was so rapturously received the first time around, as well as what to expect once it’s back.

Tiny Toons

CBS

“What we liked about the first season was we just looked at it as 30 minutes on television. We weren’t trying to think about it in terms of sitcom tropes and what has come before. We really tried to just devolve what television was. We just had 30 minutes to do whatever we want,” Donald explained. “So we just went into this being like ‘Why are we going to do seasons? Everybody does seasons.’ I felt like the theme that we really wanted to go for was this. I think in the writer’s room we talked a lot about How I Spent My Summer Vacation by the Tiny Toons which is a show we really liked. That was kind of the inspiration for season two.”

Now, before you start thinking that Earn, Van (Zazie Beets), Paper Boi (Brian Tyree Henry) and the rest of the gang are going to suddenly get animated or spend some time with some animals or something like that (though, with this show, that might still be possible), Donald’s brother Stephen Glover, who writes and serves as executive producer on Atlanta, explained how that early ’90s animated classic truly inspired this new batch of episodes.

Summer Vacation Tiny Toons episodes were broken up into a bunch of episodes, like eight or nine, but if you watched them all together, it was a movie,” he explained. “We had this idea like, yeah, a whole story, but being told in a bunch of little parts.”

“You enjoy them more when they’re all together, but you also enjoy them in little bit,” Donald added.

As for the interesting new title, Stephen also kindly explained to the room what it was all about. “Robbin’ Season, for most of you that don’t know, is a time in Atlanta before Christmastime and New Year’s, but it’s basically a bunch of crime happens in the city because people have their Christmas gifts,” he said. “It’s just a time where robberies go up, like all times…It’s just a very tense and desperate time, so we kind of wanted to make that the backdrop of the season…Robbin’ Season’s kind of a metaphor for all of our characters.”

When the conversation turned to the pressure felt trying to capitalize on the first season’s success in the face of fan expectations, Donald admitted that he’s wary of giving people what they think they want. “It just feels like everybody wants you to do the thing that they like again,” he said.

“At one point you talked about how last season, the ‘B.A.M.’ episode was sort of the anomaly or the one that completely unboxed what the TV format could be and you saying, ‘We can’t do another one like that,'” Zazie added. “So, like, not copying yourself.”

Something tells us that for the endlessly creative artist at the helm, not copying himself shouldn’t be much of a problem.

Atlanta Robbin’ Season kicks off on Thursday, March 1 at 10 p.m. on FX.

Disney confirms the full cast for The Lion King live-action remake. Walt Disney Pictures has found a great deal of success in recent years with live-action updates of staples from their animated classics collection. Kenneth Branagh’s Cinderella and Bill Condon’s Beauty and the Beast both stuck closely to their respective animated films – which are themselves adaptations of well known fairy tales – with minor updates for modern audiences and, of course, live-action imagery. Disney even ventured into adapting their animated films starring primarily animal characters with Jon Favreau’s The Jungle Book, which was met by positive critical reviews and an extremely successful box office haul. Next, Favreau is re-teaming with the Mouse House for a live-action remake of The Lion King, which is itself an adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Now, Disney has confirmed the full cast for Favreau’s Lion King. Disney unveiled the full cast of The Lion King, confirming a number of names that were previously reported to be in discussions or various stages of signing on for the project. Among the biggest confirmations are Beyoncé as Nala and Chiwetel Ejiofor as the villainous Scar. The full cast as revealed by Disney includes Donald Glover as Simba, Beyoncé as Nala, James Earl Jones as Mufasa, Ejiofor as Scar, Alfre Woodard as Sarabi, John Oliver as Zazu, John Kani as Rafiki, Seth Rogen as Pumbaa, Billy Eichner as Timon, Eric Andre as Azizi, Florence Kasumba as Shenzi, Keegan-Michael Key as Kamari, JD McCrary as Young Simba, and Shahadi Wright Joseph as Young Nala. As previously announced, The Lion King will hit theaters in the summer of 2019. It’s being directed by Favreau from a script by Jeff Nathanson, while Hans Zimmer will compose the score. A previous report indicated Beyoncé may work on the soundtrack and given Glover’s own musical career, The Lion King could prove to be a musical triumph for Disney. As was the case with Disney’s previous live-action adaptations of the company’s animated classics, the Mouse House has assembled an all-star cast to lend their talent to these beloved characters – though, of course, Jones will be returning to voice the same character from Disney’s 1994 animated feature. The other members of Favreau’s Lion King will have to contend with the legacy of their predecessors as the animated movie is undoubtedly a favorite for many who grew up watching Disney’s catalogue of films. It did, after all, debut during the heyday of the Disney Renaissance in the late ’80s/early ’90s. Still, Favreau and Disney have brought together a group of high calibre talent who will each no doubt put their own spins on their character. Whether Disney’s latest live-action venture will be as successful as Beauty and the Beast or The Jungle Book remains to be seen. That said, the Mouse House has seemingly found a formula for success when it comes to their live-action updates, so The Lion King will likely be another massive hit for Disney and Favreau.

Writer and producer on FX’s Emmy-winning & Golden Globe-winning series Atlanta, Stefani Robinson, has signed an exclusive overall production deal with FX Productions, the studio behind the breakout comedy series. Under the agreement, Robinson will develop television series for FX Networks and other outlets.

Atlanta is essentially a show about black life, being black, and overall blackness, and that’s what makes it great because it is a series that is truly “for the culture.”  It revolves around the life and times of  Earn and his career managing up the up-and-coming Atlanta rapper Paper Boi, who is also his cousin.

“Stefani has emerged as one of the brightest new writers and producers in little more than a year since she first joined the Atlanta team,” said Nick Grad, President of Original Programming, FX Networks. “She wrote or contributed to many unforgettable episodes, helping to make it the breakout comedy of the year. Stefani has continued to grow as an artist and, under this new overall deal, we can’t wait to collaborate with her on future projects.”

In addition to her work on Atlanta, Robinson also is a writer and producer on the upcoming Untitled Marvel’s Deadpool animated series coming to FXX in 2018. She also wrote for FXX’s Man Seeking Woman, and is currently writing the Princeless feature adaptation for Sony and recently sold an idea to Fox Searchlight.

Atlanta will return to FX in 2018!
