A Night to Remember: Young Atlanta’s 12th Annual Fashion Exhibition Honors Negro Baseball League Legacy at Georgia Tech’s Russ Chandler Stadium, November 10, 2024

On November 10, 2024, the 12th Annual Young Atlanta Fashion Exhibition brought Georgia Tech’s Russ Chandler Stadium to life with a vibrant celebration of Black creativity and resilience. This year’s theme, “BlackBalled,” paid homage to the history of the Negro Baseball League while showcasing the fresh perspectives and talents of Atlanta’s youth and rising creatives. Founded in 2012 by Charles “HOLLYANDROO” Pabai (Executive Producer), Young Atlanta has been dedicated to uplifting the next generation, providing a platform for young talent in art, design, music, and fashion.

The night started with a moving rendition of “Lift Every Voice,” followed by an energetic performance from a local high school band and dancers from Jonesboro High School. Months of training led to the big night, as models worked tirelessly with professional coaches, including Antwain Donté, Chisom, and Carolyna, to perfect their runway walk and presence. The runway showcased collections from 18 designers, including standout pieces from the following: HOLLYANDROO, Karim Richie, Saber Brand, NBD Fashion, Teho, and House of Imah. Elaine Rodriguez (Project Manager, Model), serving as the night’s MC, captivated the crowd as she guided the audience through the event theme, broadcasted on the stadium’s big screen.

Newark, NJ– The 24 Hours of Peace event, hosted by Mayor Ras J. Baraka was nothing short of electrifying. As the crowd funneled in, in droves, Newark’s own Zaraye took the stage and would deliver a performance that had the crowd and social media buzzing. 

You felt the crowd’s palpable anticipation as some of us had first-row seats to watch her rehearse in the background before hitting the stage– and Zaraye more than lived up to the hype.

Making an immediate statement with her eccentric fashion choice– a sleek black leather jacket and top paired with a striking lime green plaid skirt. Zaraye’s edgy leather and vibrant plaid combo came together perfectly to showcase her unique style, fashion background and ensured to turn plenty of heads before she even dropped the beat to her first song. 

Kicking off her set with her eagerly awaited single “23 Remix”, produced by Jersey’s own Kamillion, her vocals excited the crowd. As she and her background dancers, mirrored in her lime green and black color palate, delivered the high-energy, precise choreography crafted under the direction of her creative director, American rapper and choreographer, Sharaya J, phones shot into the air as fans were eager to capture every moment of the captivating routines.

The momentum continued to build as she transitioned into “Bougie”. Between Zaraye’s confident delivery and the dancers’ dynamic movements, the energy was on another level, showing an undeniable connection between Zaraye and her audience. 

By the time her performance ended, social media was already buzzing and one thing was clear, she had made a positive  impression on those attending the 24 Hours Of Peace event. The crowd raved about her standout moment with praises from her style to her stage presence and the electric atmosphere she created.

“I came out to the 24 Hours of Peace event to see one of my favorite artists, Honey Bxby. I was left excited to follow the journey of Zaraye. I think she will be a star soon too, Jersey stand up” said Jennifer Richardson– a 25 year old woman from Newark. 

Zaraye’s performance was an amazing showcase of her amazing blend between music, fashion and choreography. She truly showcased herself as not only an upcoming talent but a formidable artist on the rise in the music industry. As videos of her performance continue to spread online, it will be pretty clear soon, her name will only get bigger from here. 

The 24 Hrs of Peace event that took place on Friday and Saturday culminated a Peace Week in the city of Newark that started Friday, Aug. 17 and included an Artist Against Violence concert Wednesday, Aug. 21 at Newark Symphony Hall’s Terrace Ballroom on Broad Street.

“We fuse the power of hip-hop music and spoken word to lift, heal, and inspire peace in our city, empowering every resident in that process, and bringing healing, hope and happiness into everyday life,” Baraka of 24 Hrs of Peace said in a statement. “During this 24 Hrs of Peace, we celebrate the reality that women are at the center of our city’s evolution as a model of peace, progress and prosperity.”

American integrated luxury fashion retailer Neiman Marcus Atlanta, presented homage to The Designer Collective for Black History Month Panel Discussion moderated by Dr. Courtney A. Hammonds, The Dean of Fashion, alongside Dr. Dionne Boyd and an extraordinary group of innovative Black fashion designers here to vanquish the status quo of luxury fashion. Sponsored by Moët Hennessy and La Fête du Rosé, elegance, sophistication, and grandeur were pillars lead the night, unapologetically displayed for all within eyeshot to marvel in during the star studded event, held on February 23, 2023, at NM Lenox Square. As the foundation of what NM Group stands for high end luxury fashion was front and center, with woven fabrics draped over shoulders, champagne flutes extended skyward and prominent artworks lining the aisles, the scent of the night was expensive colognes and perfumes, wafts of Cognac, and sophistication infused with stains of triumph and confidence never to be wiped off.

“The Dean of Fashion” taught a lesson plan in steadfastness, perseverance, and moxie not soon to be forgotten by any well dressed patron in attendance nor onlooker seeking the final piece to complete their ensemble for the night. Female entrepreneurship is at an all time high. Women now make up 40 percent of new entrepreneurs in the United States — the highest percentage since 1996, according to the 2016 Kauffman Index of Startup Activity. Black female entrepreneurship in Atlanta, Georgia has blossomed especially in the entertainment business where Atlanta has become home to some of the biggest stars and artists shining light on the south’s unique fashion style and trends. She picture perfect boutique is the latest showroom now open in the heart of Atlanta perfect for your everyday looks and red carpet glam. We spoke with young boss, Tikila Wilcox about her journey to entrepreneurship while balancing motherhood and a list of other gigs that girl boss herself balances. Tikila is celebrating her 30th birthday today and couldn’t be more excited about her new business and boutique!

What made you want to become an entrepreneur?

TW: As a child I loved fashion, I’d like to say “it’s in me not on me” jokingly, I love to dress and style. I had my first job at sixteen and from there I knew I wanted to be on my own time.

What was the first step you took in putting your vision into motion?

TW: Getting into modeling and music videos were the first steps I took into breaking into the entertainment business. What risks did you take with your business?

TW: I took risks by investing the last of my funds several times into my business. I’ve worked long days and nights without sleep because I rarely say “no” to a booking. The more I’m booked the more people I encounter. The more people I encounter the more clientele I receive.

What’s the best way to build your business and still keep yourself afloat financially?

TW: Stay focused on working towards your goals and focus on what’s important.

Top 3 things you would tell young females aspiring to own their own boutiques one day?

TW: Pray, Listen, and  Act on it!
