Alliance Theatre Premieres True-Crime Musical ‘Like Father’ on the Hertz Stage
The Alliance Theatre is presenting the world premiere of Like Father, a new folk-pop musical thriller, on the Hertz Stage in Atlanta, running October 8 through November 15, 2026.
Created by Jacob Ryan Smith, with book, music and lyrics by Smith and Caroline Pernick, Like Father follows seventeen-year-old Chris, who moves in with her estranged mother and stepfather after her father’s arrest. When a popular true-crime podcast resurfaces the family’s past, they are forced to confront the truth behind what brought them together — or risk being undone by its exposure.
Directed by Alliance Jennings Hertz Artistic Director Tinashe Kajese-Bolden, with choreography by Dell Howlett, the musical explores legacy, identity, grief, forgiveness and the cost of obsession — inspired by the loved ones left in the wake of infamous serial killers, and by the true-crime industry’s meteoric rise to more than 250 million listeners. Kajese-Bolden describes the show as a story of confronting inherited histories and forging identity beyond them, with “ferocious musicality and emotional vulnerability, razor-sharp humor and real danger.”
Like Father was a semi-finalist at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center’s National Music Theater Conference and won the inaugural Open Jar Broadway Shark Tank. The production runs about 140 minutes with an intermission and is recommended for audiences ages 13 and up.

The series also carries performances by the Vienna Philharmonic and The Philadelphia Orchestra as part of Carnegie Hall’s season-long Mahler symphony cycle led by Yannick Nézet-Séguin, alongside chamber music programs spotlighting Beethoven and Brahms.
