College Football Roundup: Five Ranked Teams Fall as Only Three Unbeatens Remain
Five unranked teams beat ranked opponents on Saturday — the most upset-packed weekend of the season — three undefeated teams fell, and for the first time since 1977 only three unbeatens remain standing through October 24: No. 1 Miami, UCLA and Utah.
No. 1 Miami 52, Pittsburgh 23: In the Hurricanes’ first game as the nation’s top-ranked team since 2002, Darian Mensah completed 31 of 37 passes for 387 yards and four touchdowns, and Malachi Toney set a school record with 16 catches for 194 yards and three scores. Miami improved to 7-0 and 5-0 in the ACC.
No. 6 Indiana 13, Michigan 6 (OT): Josh Hoover scored on a 4-yard keeper in overtime for the game’s only touchdown as Indiana won at Michigan for the first time since 1967. Freshman Tommy Carr, starting in place of the benched Bryce Underwood, threw for 167 yards for Michigan, which outgained Indiana but failed on third-and-goal from the 1 in the second half.
No. 9 UCLA 28, Michigan State 10: Ty Dieffenbach threw for 198 yards and a touchdown and Anthony Woods ran for 112 yards as UCLA (7-0, 5-0 Big Ten) held Michigan State to 156 total yards to join Miami and Utah as the last unbeatens.
No. 12 Kentucky 34, Vanderbilt 17: Kenny Minchey threw and ran for a touchdown as Kentucky won its sixth straight and its fifth straight SEC game for the first time since 1977, moving alone atop the SEC standings.
No. 13 Alabama 31, Texas A&M 20: Keelon Russell threw for 311 yards and three touchdowns, two of them in the fourth quarter, as Alabama rallied from a fourth-quarter deficit on homecoming. Rico Scott caught six passes for 156 yards.
Minnesota 13, No. 15 Iowa 10: Luke Drzewiecki drilled a 46-yard field goal as time expired after Iowa tied it late on a 98-yard drive. Minnesota’s defense forced four turnovers.
Wisconsin 24, No. 16 USC 7: Wisconsin’s defense held USC to minus-17 rushing yards and sacked Jayden Maiava five times in Madison, limiting a Lincoln Riley team to its fewest points ever. Former Trojan Bryan Jackson II scored the go-ahead touchdown against his old team.
No. 18 LSU 38, Auburn 17: Sam Leavitt threw for a career-high 387 yards and three touchdowns and ran for a fourth as LSU outgained Auburn 552-271 to end an eight-game SEC road losing streak.
Elsewhere: No. 23 SMU outscored California 42-0 in the second half to win 59-20; Boise State scored 21 unanswered points late to beat Washington State 31-10; No. 24 Northwestern got five total touchdowns from Aidan Chiles in a 42-14 rout of Rutgers; No. 25 Arizona cruised past Iowa State 39-3 behind 308 yards from Noah Fifita; Illinois held Oregon scoreless in the second half to win 21-10 and effectively end the Ducks’ playoff hopes; Oklahoma beat Mississippi State 23-15; Oklahoma State hung 57 on Colorado; Virginia Tech edged Clemson 20-16; and Syracuse beat North Carolina 31-30 in overtime.
The playoff picture sharpened considerably: the Big 12, which began the day with three unbeatens, now belongs to Utah alone after BYU and Texas Tech both lost, while Kentucky sits alone atop the SEC and Ohio State, Notre Dame and Georgia — all idle Saturday — watch the field thin around them.

HBCU Roundup: Bethune-Cookman Stuns Jackson State, Howard Wins OT Thriller as Celebration Bowl Race Blows Open
The two teams projected to meet in Atlanta for the Celebration Bowl both lost on the same Saturday. Jackson State, the SWAC favorite, and Morgan State, the MEAC favorite, each fell at home in conference play, and the road to Atlanta is suddenly wide open on both sides.
Bethune-Cookman 24, Jackson State 21: Tyler Jefferson hit Rickie Shaw II for a 19-yard touchdown with 40 seconds left as Bethune-Cookman beat Jackson State for the first time since joining the SWAC. The Wildcats led 17-7 at halftime, fell behind 21-17 with 2:56 left after a punt disaster gave Jackson State the ball at the 1, then drove 75 yards to win it. Jackson State drove to the Bethune-Cookman 32 in the final seconds but missed a 49-yard field goal at the horn. The SWAC East is now Bethune-Cookman and Alabama A&M tied at 3-1, with Jackson State a game back at 3-2.
Howard 26, Morgan State 20 (OT): Howard trailed 20-6 early in the fourth quarter before backup quarterback Isaiah Freeman sparked a comeback, throwing and running for touchdowns to force overtime. Morgan State had the ball first in OT, and on fourth-and-19, Ben Chandler IV intercepted Cameron Edge at the 13 and returned it 87 yards for the walk-off touchdown.
North Carolina Central 31, Delaware State 12 (Friday): Freshman Gino Addison ran 31 times for 214 yards and two touchdowns as NCCU opened MEAC play Friday night with 31 unanswered points after trailing 6-0. The Eagles rolled up 427 total yards and scored on all five red-zone trips.
South Carolina State 22, Norfolk State 7: The two-time defending MEAC champions won their 12th straight conference game, with Mason Pickett-Hicks scoring both Bulldogs touchdowns and Jett Jackson kicking three field goals. Howard, North Carolina Central and South Carolina State all opened MEAC play 1-0, while Morgan State’s loss leaves it with almost no margin for error in the five-game league schedule.
More SWAC: Miguel Arana kicked a 46-yard field goal as time expired to give Texas Southern a 24-21 homecoming win over Southern; Arkansas-Pine Bluff held off Florida A&M 31-28 in Tallahassee, where a blocked extra point proved decisive; and Prairie View A&M stayed atop the SWAC West with a 30-19 nonconference win at East Texas A&M, sealed by Chase Bingmon’s 52-yard touchdown run.
CIAA: Bowie State handed Johnson C. Smith its first conference loss, 16-13, on a 7-yard touchdown pass with 34 seconds left in Bowie’s homecoming game; Virginia Union stayed perfect in the league at 6-0 with a 49-6 rout of Shaw; Fayetteville State scored 36 second-quarter points to beat Bluefield State 51-13; Winston-Salem State beat Lincoln 21-14; and Elizabeth City State held off Livingstone 34-26.
SIAC: Kentucky State moved alone into first place at 6-1 when Juan Gainous hit Aiyon Carter for a 48-yard touchdown with 21 seconds left to beat Savannah State 27-24; Benedict blanked Albany State’s offense in a 29-8 win; Edward Waters quarterback Tavion Faulk accounted for seven touchdowns in a 62-14 rout of Clark Atlanta; Central State beat Miles 48-20; Tuskegee edged Allen 26-23; and Lane earned its first win of the season, 16-6 at Fort Valley State.
