Daisy Ridley to Headline ‘Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea’ Series for Paramount+
Daisy Ridley is heading under the sea. The Star Wars star is set to headline a reimagining of Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, a new series in development at Paramount+ from Legendary Television, and will also serve as an executive producer on the project.
Written by Akiva Goldsman and directed by Matt Shakman — who executive-produces alongside Goldsman and Ridley — the series draws on Irwin Allen’s 1961 feature film and the ABC television series that followed. Ridley plays Lee Crane, a brilliant ocean scientist who joins a classified government programme after an Arctic expedition claims the life of her twin sister.
At the centre of the story is the USS Seaview, a futuristic submarine discovered encased in ice, bearing mysterious symbols — and operational only when Crane boards it. As its commander, she leads the crew on missions to contain mysterious forces threatening the world, on a journey that leads toward a hidden history of the oceans and the fabled city of Atlantis. The series is being developed in association with the Irwin Allen Estate.
Ridley rose to global prominence as Rey in Star Wars: The Force Awakens and its sequels, with further credits including Murder on the Orient Express and Young Woman and the Sea. She will next be seen in Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol and the romantic comedy The Last Resort, opposite Alden Ehrenreich.

Tom Cruise Named 52nd Recipient of the AFI Life Achievement Award
Tom Cruise is set to receive American cinema’s most prestigious career honor. The American Film Institute has named Cruise the 52nd recipient of the AFI Life Achievement Award, recognising a career that has defined the modern blockbuster for more than four decades.
Few actors have shaped the theatrical era the way Cruise has. From his breakout in Risky Business and the phenomenon of Top Gun, through dramatic heavyweight turns in Rain Man, Born on the Fourth of July, A Few Good Men and Jerry Maguire, to the Mission: Impossible franchise — where his commitment to practical stunt work became the industry standard — Cruise has remained the defining movie star of his generation.
The AFI Life Achievement Award, established in 1973, is presented to a single honoree whose body of work has made a lasting contribution to American culture. For Cruise, the tribute caps a run that has consistently championed the big-screen experience, drawing global audiences back into cinemas and setting box-office benchmarks that few performers in history can match.
He joins one of the most exclusive honor rolls in film — a recognition, four decades in, that the mission is far from over.
