Gaza Meets Gully Again: Vybz Kartel and Mavado Share One Stage for the First Time in 18 Years at “A Taste of Reggae Sumfest”

Dancehall history was made in St. Ann. Vybz Kartel and Mavado shared a stage on July 18, 2026 at “A Taste of Reggae Sumfest,” a special one-night edition of Reggae Sumfest held at Plantation Cove in St. Ann, Jamaica. It was the first time the two dancehall giants had performed on the same stage since their famous Sting clash in 2008 — an 18-year gap, closed in a single night.

The one-off format was born of necessity. Hurricane Melissa devastated Montego Bay on October 28, 2025 and left Sumfest’s longtime home, the Catherine Hall Entertainment Complex, unusable for the 2026 edition. Organizer Joe Bogdanovich, CEO of Downsound Records, told The Gleaner: “Rather than cancel or compromise the experience, we made the strategic decision to recalibrate,” stressing, “It’s important to be clear that this is not a relocation of the festival from Catherine Hall Entertainment Complex. Montego Bay remains the home of Reggae Sumfest.”

On stage, the reunion played as pure celebration. The two traded songs back and forth like a duo, running hit after hit in what coverage described as a friendly clash between two dancehall giants — the music and the moment taking the night, together. Rastafari News reported more than 35,000 fans in attendance for the night, a figure reported rather than officially confirmed, but by every account the crowd witnessed something the genre had waited nearly two decades to see again.

The supporting lineup carried the night deep: Queen Ifrica, Shawn Storm, Jamal, Harry Toddler, Marcy Chin, Ayetian and Young Wild Apache, with sound-system sets from DJ Mac, Shauna Controlla, Code Red Sound, C Note Sound and Ricky Platinum.

The reunion immediately went international. Promoters confirmed Kartel and Mavado sharing the bill at London’s O2 Arena on September 9, 2026, and headlining Freedom Street Europe in Malta, September 10–13, 2026. Reggae Sumfest itself was founded in 1993 by Summerfest Productions, with Bogdanovich and Downsound taking charge in 2016 — and its one-night detour to Plantation Cove may yet stand as the most talked-about edition in its history.
