Manchester City 5-1 AEK Athens: Foden Hat-Trick Lights Up the Etihad

Published

on

Phil Foden is back. The Manchester City midfielder scored his first-ever Champions League hat-trick on Tuesday as City swept aside AEK Athens 5-1 at the Etihad, their second win of the league phase.

Foden had waited 10 months for a goal before scoring against Ipswich Town at the weekend. Four days later he had four goals in two games. Elliot Anderson opened the scoring on 12 minutes, reacting quickest after Enzo Fernandez’s free-kick hit the crossbar, for his first goal for the club. Foden doubled the lead on 34 minutes from a Rico Lewis assist.

AEK briefly threatened a shock when Stavros Pilios pulled one back on 52 minutes, but Rayan Cherki restored the cushion five minutes later, and Foden finished the job with goals on 65 and 76 minutes, both set up by Lewis and youngster Ryan McAidoo.

City did it all without Erling Haaland, who was rested entirely, with 17-year-old Floyd Samba deputising. Manager Enzo Maresca made his point: this City side has plenty of ways to score. It was City’s 10th win in 12 matches in all competitions this season.

“Still got a long way to go, but I am going in the right direction,” Foden said. “I want to keep working hard and keep being the best I can for the manager and the team.”

Borussia Dortmund vs Eintracht Frankfurt Preview: Unbeaten BVB Defend Second Place

on

Borussia Dortmund put their unbeaten Bundesliga record on the line on Saturday when Eintracht Frankfurt visit Signal Iduna Park (12:30pm ET) in one of the fixtures of the German weekend.

Niko Kovac’s Dortmund sit second with 14 points from four wins and two draws, level on points at the top, and their success has been built on a rock-solid defence: just four goals conceded in six games. Serhou Guirassy and Fabio Silva have four goals apiece, and BVB warmed up with a 2-1 Champions League win away to Sabah on Tuesday. Captain Emre Can remains sidelined, but the home form is formidable; the last meeting between these sides in Dortmund, in May, finished 3-2 to the hosts.

Frankfurt, 11th with eight points, are the division’s great entertainers and its great concern. They have scored 10 goals but conceded 16, were humbled 6-0 by RB Leipzig earlier this month, and only last week recorded a first clean sheet in 14 league fixtures in a 1-0 win over Koln. Jonathan Burkardt and Younes Ebnoutalib lead the line for Adi Hutter’s side, with Mario Gotze pulling strings behind them.

Dortmund start as clear favourites, but Frankfurt’s threat on the counter means the Yellow Wall may not get a quiet evening.
