Olivia Colman, Alexander Skarsgård and Elizabeth Debicki at the Los Angeles premiere of Wicker

Olivia Colman, Alexander Skarsgård and Elizabeth Debicki brought one of the year’s most unusual love stories to Los Angeles on Tuesday (October 20), premiering Wicker at the DGA Theater.

Adapted from a story by Ursula Wills-Jones, Wicker centers on a fisherwoman and the woven wicker husband made for her — a premise the premiere leaned into, with the film’s full-size woven costume displayed on the carpet. Skarsgård posed beside the figure, giving guests a close look at the practical suit built by Joe Dunckley and Wētā Workshop, a piece of hand-crafted work that plays the romantic lead opposite the cast.

The film is written and directed by Alex Huston Fischer and Eleanor Wilson, and produced by Tim Headington, Justin Lothrop and Brad Zimmerman. Its craft team includes cinematographer Lol Crawley, production designer Renátó Cseh, costume designers Tóth András Dániel and Attila Godena-Juhász, and composer Anna Meredith.

Colman arrived in a red blouse and long dark skirt, Debicki in a short black dress, and Skarsgård in a black top and patterned shorts, with the three leads posing together for the cameras. Among the guests was Bill Skarsgård, on hand to support his brother.

With its handmade leading man and fairy-tale premise, Wicker is shaping up as one of the season’s most distinctive independent releases.

Director Beth de Araújo

The Montclair Film Festival has named Beth de Araújo its 2026 Breakthrough Director, honoring the filmmaker on Sunday, October 18 at The Bellevue Theatre following a screening of her new film, Josephine.

In presenting the award, the festival praised de Araújo’s “compassionate and deeply felt exploration of trauma, humanity, and the responsibilities that bind us to one another” — the qualities that have marked her rise as one of the most closely watched American directors of her generation.

De Araújo first drew major attention as the writer and director of Soft & Quiet, her blistering debut feature, which premiered at SXSW and earned her a place on year-end lists and awards ballots for breakthrough filmmaking. Josephine is her second feature, and the Montclair honor — part of the festival’s annual Honors program, which this year also salutes Ava DuVernay and Tony Gilroy — confirms her standing as a director whose work travels.

The 14th Montclair Film Festival runs October 16–25 in Montclair, New Jersey.
