Onikan Releases New Afro-Fusion EP ‘SATURN’
Some artists make their presence known through bold statements, while others allow their music to speak at its own pace. For Nigerian singer-songwriter Onikan, that approach is central to her artistry. Rooted in emotional honesty, quiet confidence and creative expression, her music brings together different influences while leaving room for the feeling behind each record to come through.
Born Timilehin in Lagos and currently based in Abuja, Onikan is an independent artist and a member of Creative Business Academy for Africa’s (CBA for Africa) 2026 Talent Development Programme. Since beginning her musical journey in 2021, she has developed a sound influenced by Afro-fusion, alternative R&B, soul, jazz and Afrobeats. Her new seven-track EP, SATURN, offers another look into the creative world she continues to build.
Getting to Know Onikan Beyond the Music
Onikan’s creative journey began long before she started releasing music. Hip-hop dance, drawing and writing shaped her early interests, while years of playing drums during secondary school helped develop her understanding of rhythm, percussion and musical space.
Growing up around church choir music also contributed to her musical foundation, while Michael Jackson’s approach to performance influenced her understanding of music as an art form.
These experiences continue to inform her sound, which balances Afro-fusion rhythms with soulful vocals and atmospheric production. Rather than relying on elaborate arrangements, Onikan embraces minimalism, allowing the music to breathe and the emotion to take centre stage.
Inside SATURN: Seven Tracks, One Creative Direction
On SATURN, Onikan brings together seven tracks: “OPEN,” “FIRE & ICE,” “LIKE DAT,” “GANGSTAR,” “REASON,” “HUNDRD” and “DUKES UP.”
The project reflects her interest in spacious production, subtle percussion and deliberate pacing. These elements create room for different sounds and vocal performances to stand out, reinforcing the understated approach that has become part of her artistic identity.
“FIRE & ICE,” identified as the EP’s lead single, provides another entry point into the project. Together, the seven tracks present listeners with a focused body of work that draws from Onikan’s Afro-fusion foundation and wider musical influences.
While the title SATURN invites curiosity, Onikan’s own explanation would be needed to establish its specific meaning. What her artist materials emphasise is the project’s connection to emotional truth, atmosphere and personal expression.
A Sound Shaped by Experience
Onikan’s approach to music is shaped by more than genre. Her background in dance and drumming informs her sense of rhythm, while her interest in writing and visual creativity contributes to a broader artistic perspective.
In her artist statement, she describes her creative process simply: “It lives between emotion and atmosphere. I don’t force a direction. I build feeling.”
That philosophy offers insight into her approach to songwriting and production. Rather than forcing her music into a particular formula, she allows mood and expression to guide the creative process.
She also states, “I’m not performing for approval. This is music as expression, identity and lived experience.” The words capture the independence and authenticity that underpin her work, providing context for the creative direction explored on SATURN.
From Earlier Releases to SATURN
Since 2021, Onikan has continued to build her catalogue independently. Her previous releases include “Lies” (2023), “2nd Chance” (2024), “Sirius” (2025) and “Surrender” (2025), alongside the previously released songs “Best of Me” and “Sonder.”
These releases form part of her ongoing musical journey, leading into the new creative phase represented by SATURN. Her work with CBA for Africa’s 2026 Talent Development Programme also forms part of her current journey as she continues developing her artistry.
With this EP, Onikan brings her influences and creative instincts together in a project shaped by soulful vocals, atmospheric production and an interest in emotional expression.
