Southridge's Spartans Have Turned Their Season All the Way Around

Four games into October, Miami Southridge’s season could have gone either way. The Spartans chose up.

Southridge has won three straight games to climb back to 4-4, and the streak has had a little bit of everything. It started with a 23-22 thriller at South Dade on October 1 — a one-point road win that could have broken a fragile team and instead galvanized it. Then came a 45-0 shutout of Everglades on October 9. Then, on October 15, the statement: a 38-10 win over Norland, a program that measures itself in state championships.

That Norland result announced that the turnaround was real. The Vikings do not lose 38-10 to just anybody, and Southridge controlled the night from start to finish to collect its third consecutive win by a combined score of 106-32.

The Spartans’ full body of work deserves context, too. Their four losses include a season opener against Columbus — the GMAC champion and one of the top three teams in Florida — a 28-6 defeat against a strong Miami Palmetto team, and a one-point overtime loss to Mater Academy Charter, 21-20. Southridge has been competitive nearly every Friday; now it is finishing.

The program’s pedigree has never been in question. Southridge is one of the proud names in Miami-Dade football, and a MaxPreps rankings jump of 28 spots this month reflects what the turnaround looks like on paper as well as on the field.

The test that remains is a big one: Fort Lauderdale Dillard, 7-2, visits on October 23, before the Spartans close the regular season at Miami Jackson on October 30. A win over Dillard would turn a nice October story into a genuine playoff push.

Either way, the Spartans have already answered the only question that mattered in September. This team did not quit on its season — it turned it into one worth watching.

Miller Grove Wolverines Hunting a Strong Finish After a Season of Fights

The Miller Grove Wolverines opened their season with a statement, and they have been fighting ever since. A 31-0 shutout of Chamblee in the opener showed what this Lithonia team can be, and the Wolverines have spent the fall proving that night was no fluke.

Miller Grove owns a 35-6 road win at McNair and a 20-8 win at Carver in Atlanta, victories built on defense and toughness. Look at those three wins together and a pattern emerges: Chamblee scored zero, McNair scored six and Carver scored eight. When the Wolverines win, they win with a defense that gives up almost nothing, and that identity travels anywhere. At 3-4, with 131 points scored and 135 allowed, nearly every Wolverines game this season has been a genuine fight, decided by which team made the plays late.

That includes the tough nights. The Wolverines fell 42-10 to a strong Columbia team on October 16 and dropped a 28-21 heartbreaker at M.L. King in an all-DeKalb battle earlier this season. Those are the kinds of games a program learns from.

That defensive identity is worth repeating, because it is rare: across their three wins, the Wolverines have allowed a total of 14 points. Fourteen. In an era of spread offenses and video-game scores, Miller Grove wins the old-fashioned way, with tackling, discipline and a defense that takes points personally. That travels in November, and it gives the Wolverines a real chance in every game left on the schedule.

The closing stretch gives Miller Grove every chance to finish the right way. South Atlanta visits on Friday, October 23, then the Wolverines travel to Cedar Grove on October 30 before closing at home against Redan.

Three games, three chances to turn a season of fights into a winning finish. In Lithonia, the Wolverines and their families have every reason to believe that is exactly what happens next.
