The Machine in Powder Springs: McEachern Rises to No. 8 in the Nation

Some programs rebuild. McEachern just reloads.

The Indians from Powder Springs have opened the season 8-0 and climbed to No. 8 in the MaxPreps national Top 25, powered by a Thursday doubleheader statement that turned heads well beyond Georgia. McEachern beat previously unbeaten Moody (Ala.) 26-7 in an interstate showdown, then knocked off in-state power Blessed Trinity (Roswell) 28-6 on the same night.

Junior quarterback Ava George was surgical across the two wins, completing 26 of 35 passes for 368 yards and three touchdowns. For the season, George has completed 75 percent of her passes — and she is a problem on the other side of the ball, too, with four interceptions on defense.

Earlier this month, McEachern won the season’s most anticipated early matchup, beating Sequoyah 21-12 on Oct. 14 in a game where both teams entered 5-0. The Indians’ defense came up with two interceptions to protect the perfect record.

The standard in Powder Springs is not a hot start. It is history. McEachern is 100-6 since 2022, a run that includes a 28-0 state championship campaign in 2024 and a state runner-up finish in 2025. Six losses in five seasons is not a typo — it is a culture.

With the GHSA state tournament set to open Nov. 18 and the finals on Dec. 8 in Atlanta, the question around Georgia flag football is the same one it has been for years: can anybody slow down the machine when it matters most? Moody arrived unbeaten and left with a 19-point loss. Blessed Trinity is a proven power and managed six points.

The Indians have made their case as Georgia’s team to beat — and one of the best teams in America, at any level of the flag game.

Eastmark’s Star Trio Is Chasing the 4A Title That Got Away

Published

Eastmark knows exactly how a championship season is supposed to end, because the Firebirds have already made the trip once — all the way to the Class 4A state championship game.

The core of that team is back, and it might be the most talented trio in Arizona.

Senior wide receiver and defensive back Kinsley McCarty caught 98 passes for 1,272 yards and 20 touchdowns last season, per The Arizona Republic’s season preview, helping lead Eastmark to that 4A title game appearance. Quarterback Paige McCrabb has a 4,191-yard, 45-touchdown passing season on her MaxPreps ledger. And wideout Mikaela Oberstein, who played tackle football as a freshman, gives the Firebirds a third star defenses have to honor.

“Eastmark has three of the best players in the state,” the Republic wrote before the season, and the Firebirds have played like it this fall. Their feed of game galleries shows the same story week after week — including a 35-3 rout of Crismon, their fourth win of the season, and the leaping grab in the photo above from their matchup with St. Mary’s.

The 4A race is never simple in Arizona. Prescott has won 29 games across its first two seasons in the league, Flagstaff and Mingus are perennial contenders, and the playoff bracket rewards nobody. But no team in the field walks in with a returning championship-game core like Eastmark’s.

For McCarty, McCrabb and Oberstein, that is the whole point of the season. The Firebirds did not come back to admire a title game appearance. They came back to finish the job, and the AIA 4A playoffs are where they intend to do it.
