Berkeley Prep's Luby Jones Just Keeps Running Away From Everybody

At some point, opposing defenses are going to run out of answers for Luby Jones. The Berkeley Prep running back has now rushed for at least 90 yards in six straight games, and his last two Fridays have been something close to unstoppable.

On October 16, Jones carried Berkeley Prep past Calvary Christian 44-13, rushing for 214 yards and a touchdown while averaging 9.3 yards per carry. The Buccaneers’ pass rush piled up seven sacks behind him, but it was Jones who set the tone all night as Berkeley won its third straight game to improve to 5-2. According to MaxPreps, Jones has averaged 174 rushing yards per game over his last three outings, compared to 103.3 per game over his first four — he is getting stronger as the season gets bigger.

A week earlier came the performance that announced him to the whole Tampa Bay area. Against state-ranked Clearwater Central Catholic, Jones rushed for 163 yards and a touchdown and caught another touchdown in a 21-20 overtime classic, as Berkeley Prep knocked off a Marauders team that came in at 5-1. Quarterback Cooper Hayes threw for 88 yards and two touchdowns in that win, and time and again it was Jones moving the chains when the Buccaneers needed it most.

Berkeley Prep is ranked among the top teams in the Tampa area by MaxPreps, and the Buccaneers’ three wins during this streak have come by a combined margin that keeps growing — a one-point overtime thriller, followed by routs that were never in doubt.

Next up is Boca Ciega on Friday, and after that the playoffs, where games shrink, fields get heavy and the teams that can run the ball on demand are the ones still standing in December.

Berkeley Prep has exactly that kind of back. Give Luby Jones a crease, and he will give the Buccaneers a season to remember.

Miller Grove Wolverines Hunting a Strong Finish After a Season of Fights

Miller Grove high school football

The Miller Grove Wolverines opened their season with a statement, and they have been fighting ever since. A 31-0 shutout of Chamblee in the opener showed what this Lithonia team can be, and the Wolverines have spent the fall proving that night was no fluke.

Miller Grove owns a 35-6 road win at McNair and a 20-8 win at Carver in Atlanta, victories built on defense and toughness. Look at those three wins together and a pattern emerges: Chamblee scored zero, McNair scored six and Carver scored eight. When the Wolverines win, they win with a defense that gives up almost nothing, and that identity travels anywhere. At 3-4, with 131 points scored and 135 allowed, nearly every Wolverines game this season has been a genuine fight, decided by which team made the plays late.

That includes the tough nights. The Wolverines fell 42-10 to a strong Columbia team on October 16 and dropped a 28-21 heartbreaker at M.L. King in an all-DeKalb battle earlier this season. Those are the kinds of games a program learns from.

That defensive identity is worth repeating, because it is rare: across their three wins, the Wolverines have allowed a total of 14 points. Fourteen. In an era of spread offenses and video-game scores, Miller Grove wins the old-fashioned way, with tackling, discipline and a defense that takes points personally. That travels in November, and it gives the Wolverines a real chance in every game left on the schedule.

The closing stretch gives Miller Grove every chance to finish the right way. South Atlanta visits on Friday, October 23, then the Wolverines travel to Cedar Grove on October 30 before closing at home against Redan.

Three games, three chances to turn a season of fights into a winning finish. In Lithonia, the Wolverines and their families have every reason to believe that is exactly what happens next.
