Chelsea vs Tottenham Preview: Blues Eye Sixth Straight Win Over Struggling Spurs

Published

on

Chelsea host Tottenham at Stamford Bridge on Saturday (12:30pm ET, NBC) in a London derby that has become one of the most one-sided fixtures in the Premier League.

The Blues have won the last six league meetings between the clubs, and Tottenham’s only Premier League victory at Stamford Bridge since 1990 came back in April 2018. Xabi Alonso’s Chelsea sit fourth with 13 points and arrive on back-to-back wins, a 5-1 thrashing of Bournemouth followed by a 2-0 win at Everton in which Pedro Neto scored in each half. Their attack has produced 17 league goals, one of the division’s best tallies.

There are problems at the back, though. Goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez is out for several weeks after surgery on a fractured jaw, so youngster Mike Penders deputises, and captain Reece James has been ruled out for the rest of the year after knee surgery.

Spurs, 16th with six points, finally recorded their first league win of the season on Monday, beating Coventry City 3-1 with three goals from outside the box. Roberto De Zerbi’s side are still battling an injury crisis, with six players out and five more doubtful, and loanee Mykhailo Mudryk cannot face his parent club. History says that may not be enough.

Borussia Dortmund vs Eintracht Frankfurt Preview: Unbeaten BVB Defend Second Place

Published

on

Borussia Dortmund put their unbeaten Bundesliga record on the line on Saturday when Eintracht Frankfurt visit Signal Iduna Park (12:30pm ET) in one of the fixtures of the German weekend.

Niko Kovac’s Dortmund sit second with 14 points from four wins and two draws, level on points at the top, and their success has been built on a rock-solid defence: just four goals conceded in six games. Serhou Guirassy and Fabio Silva have four goals apiece, and BVB warmed up with a 2-1 Champions League win away to Sabah on Tuesday. Captain Emre Can remains sidelined, but the home form is formidable; the last meeting between these sides in Dortmund, in May, finished 3-2 to the hosts.

Frankfurt, 11th with eight points, are the division’s great entertainers and its great concern. They have scored 10 goals but conceded 16, were humbled 6-0 by RB Leipzig earlier this month, and only last week recorded a first clean sheet in 14 league fixtures in a 1-0 win over Koln. Jonathan Burkardt and Younes Ebnoutalib lead the line for Adi Hutter’s side, with Mario Gotze pulling strings behind them.

Dortmund start as clear favourites, but Frankfurt’s threat on the counter means the Yellow Wall may not get a quiet evening.
