Manchester United vs Bournemouth Preview: Carrick Needs a Response at Old Trafford

Published

on

Michael Carrick’s Manchester United have run out of room for error. Winless in seven games in all competitions and humiliated 4-1 by Como in the Champions League on Wednesday, United host Bournemouth at Old Trafford on Sunday (10am ET, Peacock) knowing the pressure will become unbearable with another slip.

United sit 13th in the Premier League with seven points and a 1-4-2 record, and have drawn their last three league games 1-1. Carrick at least gets Leny Yoro back from suspension and Ayden Heaven back from illness after both missed the Como debacle, but Patrick Dorgu, Luke Shaw, Kobbie Mainoo, Manuel Ugarte and Benjamin Sesko all remain out, with Lisandro Martinez and Marcus Rashford doubtful.

Captain Bruno Fernandes publicly blamed the staff’s game plan after the Como defeat, but Carrick declined to punish him, insisting he will do what is best for the football club. Bryan Mbeumo, who has scored in back-to-back league games, offers one source of hope.

Bournemouth arrive in form. Marco Rose’s side have won their last three matches without conceding, including a first Premier League win of the season over Sunderland, and Marcus Tavernier leads them with four league goals. Four of the last five meetings between these clubs have finished level, including a 2-2 draw in March.

Borussia Dortmund vs Eintracht Frankfurt Preview: Unbeaten BVB Defend Second Place

Published

on

Borussia Dortmund put their unbeaten Bundesliga record on the line on Saturday when Eintracht Frankfurt visit Signal Iduna Park (12:30pm ET) in one of the fixtures of the German weekend.

Niko Kovac’s Dortmund sit second with 14 points from four wins and two draws, level on points at the top, and their success has been built on a rock-solid defence: just four goals conceded in six games. Serhou Guirassy and Fabio Silva have four goals apiece, and BVB warmed up with a 2-1 Champions League win away to Sabah on Tuesday. Captain Emre Can remains sidelined, but the home form is formidable; the last meeting between these sides in Dortmund, in May, finished 3-2 to the hosts.

Frankfurt, 11th with eight points, are the division’s great entertainers and its great concern. They have scored 10 goals but conceded 16, were humbled 6-0 by RB Leipzig earlier this month, and only last week recorded a first clean sheet in 14 league fixtures in a 1-0 win over Koln. Jonathan Burkardt and Younes Ebnoutalib lead the line for Adi Hutter’s side, with Mario Gotze pulling strings behind them.

Dortmund start as clear favourites, but Frankfurt’s threat on the counter means the Yellow Wall may not get a quiet evening.
