Toronto’s grassroots fight series is back in Parkdale. Cold Warz VIII takes over The Parkdale Hall on Sunday, November 8, with a full afternoon and evening of amateur Muay Thai and Olympic style boxing on one card.

Cold Warz has been putting local fighters in the ring since 2017, and the recipe has not changed through eight editions: rising talent from gyms across Ontario, matched in competitive bouts, in front of the community that trains with them. The show is hosted by 1MR One More Round, presented by Shoreland Developments, and sanctioned by Muaythai Ontario and Boxing Ontario. The summer edition set the bar, closing with Jack Della Rosa winning the Cold Warz 71 KG Championship in the Class A Muay Thai main event at Cold Warz VII Summer Smash.

The announced matchups for Sunday lean into the next generation. In Youth Novice boxing, Lexi Arreola Garcia of Champion Boxing and Fitness meets Mayla Rocco of City Boxing Club. Avery Biernacki Clarke of City Boxing Club faces Duke North of Twin Tiger Boxing, and Abdul Terfas of Champion Boxing takes on Primi Hernandez of Budo Canada. Nabil Kashani of 1MR draws a new opponent after a short notice change and now meets Alex Rodriguez of City Boxing Club.

The card climbs from there. Akem Shergill of Champion Boxing meets Jay Thomas of Sully’s Boxing Gym in Elite Novice boxing, and Kiskama Lemor of City Boxing Club goes head to head with Chance Meyers of Twin Tiger Boxing. One of the most interesting pairings crosses disciplines, as Muay Thai and kickboxing talent Carson Dancy of Blaze Performance Training makes his debut against boxer Adam As’ad of Sully’s, who comes in off a recent win.

The Parkdale Hall setup keeps fans close to the action, with standing room on the floor and ringside seating, and the show is open to all ages. Doors open at 2:30 PM and the opening bell is at 3:00 PM. Tickets are 65 dollars at ticket.coldwarz.ca, and the promotion notes that capacity in the hall is limited.

For the second time in four days, Cardinal Newman erased a two-set deficit on the road to keep its season alive, rallying past Saint Mary’s 3-2 on Saturday afternoon in the North Coast Section Division 2 quarterfinals. The Cardinals dropped the first two sets 25-22 and 25-23, then stormed back to win 25-18, 25-20 and 15-7 at Saint Mary’s in Albany.

Newman actually built a 20-15 lead in the second set before Saint Mary’s rallied to take it, leaving the Cardinals one set from elimination for the second straight match. On Wednesday, the fifth seeded Cardinals had done the same thing to Granada, winning 3-2 after trailing 2-0 in the first round.

Junior outside hitter Emma Donnelly led the comeback with a team high 21 kills after a slow start in the first two sets. Freshman Kensi Grover delivered 18 kills and 18 digs, and junior Gracie Acosta added 13 kills. Junior setter Addison Smith ran the offense with 55 assists and 12 digs, while Sabina Walsh had nine digs and three aces and senior Jordan Espinosa served five aces.

Head coach Daryl Kapis credited the serve receive passing of Adeline Brockett, Walsh, Teneli Galli and Grover for turning the match. “The four of them were the main stars of the game because of how well they passed in serve receive,” Kapis said.

The win improved Newman to 19-10 and avenged two losses to Saint Mary’s over the past year, including last season’s section semifinal. Across their first two playoff matches, the Cardinals have won all six sets they have played while facing elimination. Newman now travels to face top seeded Branson in the semifinals on Wednesday, November 4.
