Santa Margarita started its CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoff run with a statement win on the road. The fifth seeded Eagles went to fourth seeded Oaks Christian on Wednesday night and won in four sets, 25-23, 29-27, 24-26 and 26-24, in the first round of Pool A play.

Every set came down to the final points. Santa Margarita took the opener by two, then survived a long second set 29-27 to build a two set lead. Oaks Christian answered in the third, winning 26-24 to stay alive, and the fourth set ran past 25 as well before the Eagles closed out the match 26-24.

The win mattered in a crowded pool. Pool A holds top seeded Mater Dei, Oaks Christian, Santa Margarita and Harvard-Westlake, and with three pool matches deciding who advances toward the Division 1 championship match, a road win over the fourth seed put the Eagles in a strong spot heading into their trip to Mater Dei on Tuesday, October 27.

Santa Margarita came into the playoffs as a Trinity League co-champion, a title the team celebrated on its own page before the bracket started. Oaks Christian, the Marmonte League champion, dropped its pool opener at home and still had Harvard-Westlake and Mater Dei ahead in pool play.

No individual statistics were reported for the match. The Eagles’ own post from the night kept it simple, with a celebration photo and the words “Eagles Win” over the final score, and the result behind it was the biggest one Pool A produced on opening night.

Amador made the long trip to Mariposa County on Tuesday night and came home with a playoff win, beating the Grizzlies 3-1 in the first round of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division V playoffs.

The Buffaloes took the opening set 25-22, dropped a tight second set 26-24, and then took over the match. Amador won the third set 25-19 and closed out the fourth 25-15 to finish off one of the bigger road wins of the opening round anywhere in the section.

The result was no small feat. Mariposa County entered the playoffs as the undefeated Southern League champion, 14-0 in league play, and the Grizzlies had not lost a league match in 42 straight outings dating back through their run of dominance, according to The Mariposan. Their only losses all season had come against larger schools, and they were playing at home in front of their own crowd.

None of that slowed the Buffaloes, who turned the night into a team celebration. The program’s own social post from the trip called it a fierce fight for the win after the long ride south, a bus trip, and a stop on the way. After dropping the second set, Amador answered with its two most comfortable sets of the night to seal the upset.

The win advanced Amador to the Division V quarterfinals, where the Buffaloes’ run ended Thursday with a 3-1 loss at Bret Harte. Mariposa County closed a standout season at 27-11, its league championship streak stopped one match into the postseason by a Sutter Creek team that refused to be intimidated.
