Erika Denae J Announces New Single “E’s Mood Pt. i & II,” First Chapter in a Four-Part Neo-Jazz Suite
Pittsburgh-born, Chicago-based artist Erika Denae J releases “E’s Mood Pt. i & II” , introducing the first installment of a four-part neo-jazz music suite centered on self-discovery, personal growth, faith, and the pursuit of becoming the best version of oneself.
What began as a simple New Year’s resolution in 2023 evolved into an artistic philosophy—and ultimately the foundation for an entire album. On January 1, 2023, shortly after releasing her Rx Melodies EP, Erika picked up her Gretsch guitar and recorded a guitar line on her phone before beat-boxing a 4/4 rhythm over it. That original recording still lives on her phone today.
At the time, Erika was determined to approach the new year differently. She wanted to move with grace and remain open to everything she believed God had in store for her. More importantly, she wanted to let go of the people, places, mindsets, and habits that no longer served her.
“I was in the mood for a new me,” Erika reflects. “I truly wanted to see all of the promises, all of the capabilities.”
That desire for transformation became the creative spark behind “E’s Mood Pt. i & II” and eventually grew into a larger album concept. Rather than simply writing about personal evolution, Erika began embodying the message in her own life. By 2024, she had returned to school to pursue music therapy, written and released a poetry book, and continued developing the album. She now plans to relocate to Chicago for an internship, further connecting her artistic journey with her passion for music, mental health, and healing.
“E’s Mood Pt. i & II” opens with lush guitar work from John Shannon, bandleader of Waking Vision, before building upon Erika’s original 2023 guitar motif. The track moves through a sophisticated blend of neo-soul rhythms and string arrangements by Pittsburgh drummer and longtime collaborator James Johnson III.
Throughout the composition, Erika embraces both simplicity and elegance, creating a soundscape that mirrors the process of personal transformation. At its core, “E’s Mood Pt. i & II” is an invitation to release what holds you back and pursue a life defined by authenticity, freedom, and possibility.
The song represents more than a new release for Erika—it is a musical reflection of a period in her life when intention became action. The lyrics and composition capture the emotional tension between who a person has been and who they are capable of becoming.
Erika Denae J exists at the intersection of music, literature, faith, and mental health, bridging the intimacy of a singer-songwriter with the innovation and improvisational spirit of jazz. Her performances draw from both classic and contemporary jazz traditions while incorporating J Dilla-inspired neo-soul, and deeply personal storytelling. The result is a sound that can feel nostalgic one moment and strikingly contemporary the next.
With “E’s Mood Pt. i & II ,” Erika begins a four-part musical journey—one that asks listeners to consider their own capacity for change and what it might mean to finally become the person they have always had the potential to be.
