Friday night belonged to the defenses in Hillsborough County, where three of the schools We Speak Media featured this week pitched shutouts and Jesuit snapped one of the county’s longest winning streaks.

Armwood 62, Leto 0: Armwood (8-1) rolled to its seventh straight win, blanking Leto (1-9) in a rout that keeps the Hawks rolling toward November.

Jesuit 45, Hillsborough 21: Jesuit (7-1) went on the road and ended Hillsborough’s six-game winning streak. The Terriers fall to 7-3.

Gaither 24, Mitchell 9: Gaither (7-3) leaned on its defense to hold Mitchell (6-3) to nine points in a statement win for the Cowboys.

Bloomingdale 36, Plant 30: Plant’s two-game winning streak ended in a one-score heartbreaker. The Panthers fall to 5-4; Bloomingdale improves to 6-3.

Plant City 23, Durant 15: The road show rolls on. Plant City (7-2) won its fourth straight and stayed perfect away from home, holding off Durant (4-5).

Palmetto 37, Sumner 0: Sumner (5-4) ran into a wall in Palmetto (7-1), which claimed the Class 5A District 10 title. Palmetto scored on its first drive on a 38-yard touchdown pass, recovered a high snap in the end zone off a Sumner punt to go up 14-0 in the first quarter, and added a 54-yard touchdown run, a short scoring run and field goals of 46, 40 and 25 yards.

East Bay 32, Middleton 0: East Bay (7-3) closed the night with a shutout of its own, blanking Middleton (4-6).

Tampa Bay Tech’s game at Spoto and Berkeley Prep’s game against Boca Ciega had no final score posted by either MaxPreps or High School On SI as of Saturday morning, so those results will be added once they are verified.

Maleek Lee’s Three Sacks Lead Palmetto’s 37-0 Shutout of Sumner for the District Title

Maleek Lee Palmetto Player of the Game

Palmetto’s defense owned Friday night, and senior defensive lineman Maleek Lee owned the line of scrimmage.

Lee recorded three sacks as the Tigers shut out Sumner 37-0 to claim the Class 5A District 10 championship — a title-game performance from a player who arrived at Palmetto this season and immediately became the anchor of its front.

The 6-foot-3, 270-pound Lee, a four-star prospect committed to Georgia Tech, transferred from Sarasota Booker for his senior year. On the biggest night of Palmetto’s season, he played like it: living in the Sumner backfield and setting the tone for a defense that never let the Stingrays find the end zone.

District championships are won in the trenches, and Lee made sure this one was. We Speak Sports names Maleek Lee our Player of the Game.
