Glamourdale Airlines Flies Again: Charlotte Fry Repeats Her World Championship Double in Aachen

Published

on

“Welcome to Glamourdale Airlines, enjoy your flight.” With those words, Charlotte Fry and Glamourdale opened a freestyle that completed a golden double at the FEI Dressage World Championship in Aachen — Grand Prix Freestyle gold added to the Grand Prix Special title they had won the day before.

The Freestyle scored 91.907%, and the sold-out Main Stadium was on its feet before the pair had even begun their final centre line. Denmark’s Cathrine Laudrup-Dufour took silver with Mount St John Freestyle on a personal-best 91.236%, while Germany’s Isabell Werth claimed bronze aboard Wendy de Fontaine on 88.650% despite an error in the two-tempi changes.

The double was built across two days. In Friday’s Grand Prix Special, Fry and Glamourdale retained their world title with 82.295%, ahead of Laudrup-Dufour on 80.927% and Germany’s Katharina Hemmer on 80.866%. Belgium’s reigning European champion Justin Verboomen and Zonik Plus finished just off the Freestyle podium on 88.439% — only 0.211 points short of bronze — and Britain’s Becky Moody placed fifth with home-bred Jagerbomb on 87.479%. More than 40,000 spectators packed the stadium for the floodlit final.

The achievement has no precedent. The double repeated the pair’s Herning 2022 sweep, making it four consecutive individual World Championship gold medals — and Fry is the first rider ever to achieve the Special-and-Freestyle double at two World Championships. Their 91.907% Freestyle bettered their own Herning 2022 winning mark of 90.654%, with artistic marks of no less than 97.200%.

“This was the most amazing feeling in the world,” Fry said. “We’ve never done a test like this… it couldn’t have been any better.” Fry and Glamourdale arrived in Aachen as defending world champions — and left with both individual titles safely retained.

Jordan Coyle closed out his week at the 80th Pennsylvania National Horse Show the way he spent it: winning. The Irish rider and Cordiamo captured the $100,000 Grand Prix de Penn National on Saturday night in the Harrisburg Coliseum.

From a starting field of 29 over a course designed by Bernardo Costa Cabral, eight pairs advanced to the jump-off. Filip de Wandel and Strongbeau set the time to beat at 38.725 seconds — and then Coyle blew it away, crossing the timers in 31.758 to win by nearly four seconds. Gustavo Xavier Cortez and Action T took second in 35.602, with de Wandel holding third.

It completed a sweep of the week’s two biggest jumper classes for Coyle, who had also won Thursday’s $30,000 1.40m Welcome with the 10-year-old Oldenburg gelding, owned by Elan Farm. Cordiamo was also named the 1.40m Jumper Champion, and Coyle received the Harrisburg Kiwanis Club Challenge Trophy.

“I know he’s a fast horse,” said Coyle, who has had Cordiamo since the gelding was 3. “He’s not going to touch them. There is a big future with him for sure. He’s very careful, he’s very competitive. If I do a good job, I think he’ll jump five-star grand prix competitively.”

The win wrapped the open jumper competition at the 80th edition of the Pennsylvania National Horse Show, held October 8-18 at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex.
