Kevin Hart Works Out New Jokes in a Tiny New York Room, Phones Locked Away

Kevin Hart is the biggest comedy draw on the planet, but on Wednesday night he went small. Hart took the stage at New York’s Gramercy Theatre for a 10 p.m. set billed simply as "Kevin Hart Works Out New Jokes" – the kind of intimate club room where new material gets built before it ever sees an arena.

The show was a phone-free experience: every phone, smart watch and camera went into a Yondr pouch on the way in, so nothing from the night leaks before the jokes are ready. Sets like this are where Hart sharpens the act that later tours the world’s biggest stages, and New York fans who scored a seat got the rarest ticket in comedy – a superstar working it out up close.

Tickets for the Gramercy date were listed from around $83. If history is any guide, the material tested in that little room on East 23rd Street is the start of his next arena run.

The nicest man in stand-up is having the biggest year in stand-up. Nate Bargatze’s Big Dumb Eyes World Tour – named after his New York Times bestselling book – plays the BYU-Idaho Center in Rexburg, Idaho on Friday, October 23, then settles into a Las Vegas residency run at Encore at Wynn on December 9-12, with more Vegas dates January 21-24.

The tour just played Auburn University’s Neville Arena on October 16 as part of its college swing. The numbers behind the run are staggering: more than 2 million tickets sold, and Bargatze recently set the record for the highest one-year gross by a comedy performer in history.

The Atlantic called him "The Nicest Man in Stand-Up," and his clean, deadpan, everybody’s-dad humor has turned arena crowds into believers. If Rexburg or Vegas is anywhere near you, this is the show to see this season.
