Miami Central's James Perrone Dropped 301 Yards on Key West

Miami Central’s offense goes where senior quarterback James Perrone takes it — and lately, that has been straight to the end zone.

Perrone’s signature performance came in the Rockets’ 63-7 rout of Key West, when he passed for 301 yards and three touchdowns in a game that was decided by halftime. A week earlier, he threw multiple touchdown passes and ran for another score in Central’s 52-10 dismantling of rival Miami Northwestern — a matchup that carried extra weight after the Bulls beat Central twice last season, including in the regional finals.

Those games powered a four-game winning streak in which Central outscored its opponents 203-35, rolling up an offense that averaged 39.4 points per game heading into the GMAC championship. Perrone is a true dual threat — MaxPreps credits him with six rushing touchdowns this season alongside his passing production — and he shares the backfield with senior running back Ninaud Joseph, who averages 130 rushing yards per game and has scored eight rushing touchdowns of his own.

Central’s 6-2 record has come against one of the hardest schedules in Florida. The Rockets opened the season in California with a 23-22 win over Orange Lutheran, and their only losses are to Georgia powerhouse Buford and to Columbus in Friday’s GMAC final — two programs ranked among the best in the nation.

The Rockets also win games on the other side of the ball, where senior defensive tackle Edwardo Thompson has recorded 11.5 sacks and junior linebacker Sabien McCloud has added eight more, giving Central a pass rush that protects Perrone’s leads.

Central hosts North Miami Beach on October 22 before a regular-season finale at Carol City, with a spot in Florida’s new Open Division still in play. As long as Perrone is dealing, the Rockets believe they can play with anybody in the state — because most weeks, they already have.

Miller Grove Wolverines Hunting a Strong Finish After a Season of Fights

Miller Grove high school football

The Miller Grove Wolverines opened their season with a statement, and they have been fighting ever since. A 31-0 shutout of Chamblee in the opener showed what this Lithonia team can be, and the Wolverines have spent the fall proving that night was no fluke.

Miller Grove owns a 35-6 road win at McNair and a 20-8 win at Carver in Atlanta, victories built on defense and toughness. Look at those three wins together and a pattern emerges: Chamblee scored zero, McNair scored six and Carver scored eight. When the Wolverines win, they win with a defense that gives up almost nothing, and that identity travels anywhere. At 3-4, with 131 points scored and 135 allowed, nearly every Wolverines game this season has been a genuine fight, decided by which team made the plays late.

That includes the tough nights. The Wolverines fell 42-10 to a strong Columbia team on October 16 and dropped a 28-21 heartbreaker at M.L. King in an all-DeKalb battle earlier this season. Those are the kinds of games a program learns from.

That defensive identity is worth repeating, because it is rare: across their three wins, the Wolverines have allowed a total of 14 points. Fourteen. In an era of spread offenses and video-game scores, Miller Grove wins the old-fashioned way, with tackling, discipline and a defense that takes points personally. That travels in November, and it gives the Wolverines a real chance in every game left on the schedule.

The closing stretch gives Miller Grove every chance to finish the right way. South Atlanta visits on Friday, October 23, then the Wolverines travel to Cedar Grove on October 30 before closing at home against Redan.

Three games, three chances to turn a season of fights into a winning finish. In Lithonia, the Wolverines and their families have every reason to believe that is exactly what happens next.
