Orlando Pride Eliminated From Playoff Race Despite 2-1 Win at Houston
The Orlando Pride did their part on Sunday. It was not enough. A 2-1 road win over the Houston Dash could not save the defending champions’ season, as Seattle Reign’s 3-1 victory over Chicago Stars hours earlier officially eliminated Orlando from the NWSL playoff race.
There was plenty to admire in the performance itself. Rookie Solai Washington won a 15th-minute penalty that Luana calmly converted, then scored her first professional goal on 31 minutes, set up by her childhood idol Marta. Houston pulled a goal back after half-time, but Orlando held firm, and they did it all without star forward Barbra Banda, who has been unable to return from international duty in Uganda due to Ebola travel restrictions.
The fall has been steep. Orlando won the NWSL Shield and Championship double in 2024, but a midseason coaching change, with Seb Hines fired and interim coach Yolanda Thomas taking over, sent the season sideways. Thomas has steadied things at 3-2-1, and the Pride have climbed no higher than 11th.
Two matches remain, against Gotham FC and Seattle, and Orlando’s role is now that of spoiler: they can still dent the postseason hopes of two contenders before the rebuild for 2027 begins.

Sioux Falls Lincoln Wins Fourth Straight South Dakota Class AA Boys Title in Shootout Classic
Sioux Falls Lincoln’s dynasty survived its hardest test yet. The Patriots beat Watertown 2-1 in a penalty shootout on October 17 at the Allen Mitchell Athletic Complex in Watertown to win their fourth consecutive South Dakota Class AA boys soccer state championship.
On a cold, windy afternoon, Watertown, playing in front of their home crowd, struck first when senior Roger Carranza scored his 23rd goal of the season six minutes into the second half. Lincoln levelled with 5:46 remaining, Jacob Burchett converting a penalty kick, and after two scoreless overtime periods the title came down to a shootout.
Both teams converted their first four kicks. Then senior goalkeeper Opland Sonnichsen saved Watertown’s fifth attempt, from Xane Fligge, and Marlo Gerling buried the winner into the upper-right corner.
“We practice a lot,” Sonnichsen said. “I knew they were good penalty kickers, so I knew I would have to dive left and right. But we got the job done.”
The title is Lincoln’s sixth overall, tying Sioux Falls Christian’s state records for consecutive championships and total championships. Head coach Alex Nelson called it “a storybook ending for these seniors.” Watertown finish a historic 16-1-1 season, the program’s best, with 16 seniors playing their final high school match.
