Washington Spirit 1-0 Gotham FC: Di Guglielmo’s First NWSL Goal Clinches Playoff Berth

Published

Lucia Di Guglielmo picked a perfect moment for her first NWSL goal. The defender’s 70th-minute winner gave the Washington Spirit a 1-0 victory over Gotham FC at Audi Field on Saturday, clinching the Spirit’s third consecutive playoff berth and denying Gotham the chance to wrap up the NWSL Shield.

Substitute Melissa Bethi, introduced at half-time, provided the decisive moment, floating a pass into the box that Di Guglielmo collected and poked past goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger. Bethi then struck the crossbar two minutes later as Washington pushed for a second.

Gotham had 63 percent of the ball, but the Spirit were the more dangerous side, outshooting the visitors 13-5 with six efforts on target to two. Goalkeeper Sandy MacIver made two saves for her 10th clean sheet of the season, and Berger needed a diving save to keep out a Trinity Rodman header in the first half.

The win was Washington’s first over Gotham since June 2024 and snapped the league leaders’ four-match unbeaten run. It also marked the return of midfielder Leicy Santos, making her first appearance since August 8. The Spirit, beaten finalists in each of the last two seasons, head to Kansas City on Sunday with momentum and a home quarterfinal still in reach.

Sioux Falls Lincoln Wins Fourth Straight South Dakota Class AA Boys Title in Shootout Classic

Sioux Falls Lincoln’s dynasty survived its hardest test yet. The Patriots beat Watertown 2-1 in a penalty shootout on October 17 at the Allen Mitchell Athletic Complex in Watertown to win their fourth consecutive South Dakota Class AA boys soccer state championship.

On a cold, windy afternoon, Watertown, playing in front of their home crowd, struck first when senior Roger Carranza scored his 23rd goal of the season six minutes into the second half. Lincoln levelled with 5:46 remaining, Jacob Burchett converting a penalty kick, and after two scoreless overtime periods the title came down to a shootout.

Both teams converted their first four kicks. Then senior goalkeeper Opland Sonnichsen saved Watertown’s fifth attempt, from Xane Fligge, and Marlo Gerling buried the winner into the upper-right corner.

“We practice a lot,” Sonnichsen said. “I knew they were good penalty kickers, so I knew I would have to dive left and right. But we got the job done.”

The title is Lincoln’s sixth overall, tying Sioux Falls Christian’s state records for consecutive championships and total championships. Head coach Alex Nelson called it “a storybook ending for these seniors.” Watertown finish a historic 16-1-1 season, the program’s best, with 16 seniors playing their final high school match.
