Rajinikanth’s ‘Jailer 2’ Smashes Records: Rs 549 Crore First Week Is the Biggest in Tamil Cinema History
Superstar Rajinikanth has rewritten the Tamil box office record book again. Jailer 2, his action sequel for Sun Pictures, has crossed Rs 549 crore worldwide in its first seven days — the biggest first week in Tamil cinema history, according to the production house.
The milestones came in a rush. Released on October 15 into the Diwali holiday window, the film grossed Rs 521 crore globally in just six days — around Rs 325 crore from India and more than $20 million (Rs 196 crore) from overseas — making it the fastest Tamil film ever to enter the Rs 500 crore club. In the process it sailed past the entire lifetime run of Rajinikanth’s own Coolie (Rs 501 crore).
Directed by Nelson Dilipkumar, with music by Anirudh Ravichander, Jailer 2 returns Rajinikanth to the role of retired jailer Muthuvel Pandian, whose quiet life is shattered by a new threat from the criminal underworld. It is the 75-year-old star’s fourth film to cross Rs 500 crore worldwide — no other Tamil actor has more than one.
The film already stands as the fourth highest-grossing Tamil release of all time, behind only 2.0 (Rs 662 crore), Leo (Rs 617 crore) and the original Jailer (Rs 605 crore) — and at its current pace, trade watchers expect it to challenge all three before its run is done.

Beth de Araújo Wins Breakthrough Director Award at Montclair for ‘Josephine’
The Montclair Film Festival has named Beth de Araújo its 2026 Breakthrough Director, honoring the filmmaker on Sunday, October 18 at The Bellevue Theatre following a screening of her new film, Josephine.
In presenting the award, the festival praised de Araújo’s “compassionate and deeply felt exploration of trauma, humanity, and the responsibilities that bind us to one another” — the qualities that have marked her rise as one of the most closely watched American directors of her generation.
De Araújo first drew major attention as the writer and director of Soft & Quiet, her blistering debut feature, which premiered at SXSW and earned her a place on year-end lists and awards ballots for breakthrough filmmaking. Josephine is her second feature, and the Montclair honor — part of the festival’s annual Honors program, which this year also salutes Ava DuVernay and Tony Gilroy — confirms her standing as a director whose work travels.
The 14th Montclair Film Festival runs October 16–25 in Montclair, New Jersey.
