Thailand’s Songkran Soaks the World: Water Festival Drives 30.35 Billion Baht in Tourism
Thailand’s traditional New Year festival, Songkran — inscribed on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list in December 2023 — ran its official holiday from 13 to 15 April 2026, and the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) reported that tourism activity exceeded expectations in every region during the 11–15 April festival window.
TAT projected the festival would generate more than 30.35 billion Baht in tourism revenue, a 6 per cent increase year-on-year, built on approximately 500,000 international arrivals (up 4 per cent, worth around 8.1 billion Baht) and 5.96 million domestic trips (up 7 per cent, worth approximately 22.25 billion Baht). TAT Governor Thapanee Kiatphaibool said the strong performance “highlights the global appeal of Thailand’s cultural charm” and reflects collaboration across government, the private sector and communities.
In Bangkok, TAT’s flagship Maha Songkran World Water Festival 2026 at Benjakitti Park welcomed 108,640 visitors between 11 and 13 April — 56,368 Thai and 52,272 international visitors — generating an estimated economic impact of 283.68 million Baht, while the Saneh Art by Songkran Festival at Lumphini Park drew more than 94,546 visitors. Silom Road, Siam Square and Khao San Road recorded consistently high attendance in the capital.
Beyond Bangkok, Ayutthaya’s “Songkran with Elephants” celebrations drew strong interest, northern and northeastern provinces staged water-pouring rituals over Buddha images and Rot Nam Dam Hua ceremonies, and in the south the Sadao border crossing in Songkhla logged over 36,000 crossings between 10 and 12 April, driven primarily by Malaysian visitors, with average hotel occupancy around 80 per cent. The Thai Ministry of Culture promoted the 2026 edition under the theme “Songkran Ban Chan – Thai Colours, Happiness Across the World.”
Taken together, TAT’s figures describe a festival working on two levels at once: a UNESCO-listed New Year tradition rooted in temple rituals and family ceremonies, and a nationwide tourism engine drawing half a million international arrivals in a single five-day window. With domestic travellers making 5.96 million trips of their own, Songkran 2026 underlined why Thailand treats its water festival as both a cultural centrepiece and one of the biggest weeks in its tourism calendar.

Gabriel “Fluffy” Iglesias Brings His Classic VW Buses to LA Auto Show Industry Day
The LA Auto Show is adding some serious star power to Industry Day. Comedian Gabriel “Fluffy” Iglesias will showcase five hand-selected classic Volkswagen buses from his famous personal collection at AutoMobility LA, the show’s industry and media day, on Thursday, November 19, and he will host meet-and-greets with attendees.
If you know Fluffy, you know the buses are no gimmick. Iglesias is one of the most devoted Volkswagen collectors in entertainment: his collection runs to nearly 30 classic buses, valued at around $3 million, and lives in a garage he calls the Fluffy Museum. It all started with his first car, a VW bus, and the obsession never left. He recently walked Ford CEO Jim Farley through the collection and the stories behind it on Ford’s DRIVE podcast.
For anyone who somehow missed him: Iglesias is one of the most successful stand-up comedians on the planet. His Netflix specials, including I’m Sorry for What I Said When I Was Hungry and Stadium Fluffy, made him the first comedian to sell out Dodger Stadium. He starred in the Netflix sitcom Mr. Iglesias and has voiced characters in Coco, Ferdinand and The Book of Life. A Fluffy appearance at an auto show is exactly where entertainment and car culture meet.
Industry Day will have plenty more on the floor. Attendees can see vehicles including the Chevy Silverado, the Rivian R2 and the Nissan Rogue, and get behind the wheel at Camp Jeep and Bronco Mountain, with test rides and drives running through the day.
The LA Auto Show says more entertainment news is coming soon, and media registration for Industry Day credentials is now open. We Speak Media will be following every announcement.
