Thunder Beat Nuggets 96-84 as Gilgeous-Alexander’s Record 141-Game Scoring Streak Ends
Jalen Williams scored a team-high 21 points and the Oklahoma City Thunder beat the Denver Nuggets 96-84 on Thursday night in a game that saw Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s NBA-record streak of 141 consecutive games scoring 20 points or more come to an end.
Gilgeous-Alexander finished with 17 points on 6-of-19 shooting. The reigning MVP went without a field goal in the first half, scoring only two points on free throws, and did not make his first basket until early in the third quarter. His 3-pointer at the third-quarter buzzer gave him seven points and put the Thunder up 70-64.
The streak, the longest in NBA history, began on November 1, 2024. Gilgeous-Alexander last scored fewer than 20 points on October 30, 2024, when he had 18 against San Antonio. He had a chance to chase 20 late in the fourth, but after his 3-pointer with 1:44 to go prompted a Denver timeout and both teams emptied their benches, he chose to stay on the sideline.
“I was gonna go out there, and then I saw that they had subbed, so I thought we should sub, too,” Gilgeous-Alexander said. “You always treat the game with respect.”
Thunder coach Mark Daigneault said he was open to leaving his star in, but the decision was Gilgeous-Alexander’s. “I just think of the class that it shows and the perspective that it shows for him to say, ‘Hey, I’m out now. The game’s calling for me to be subbed out,'” Daigneault said.
Chet Holmgren added 12 points, 17 rebounds and four blocks for Oklahoma City (2-0), and Ajay Mitchell scored 12 off the bench. The Thunder trailed 48-44 at halftime and by as many as nine points before taking control with a 26-16 third quarter and a 26-20 fourth, forcing 13 Denver turnovers in the second half.
Aaron Gordon led the Nuggets with 20 points and six rebounds in their season opener. Nikola Jokic was held to 13 points on 5-of-19 shooting, DeMar DeRozan added 13 and Jamal Murray scored just six as Denver (0-1) shot its way out of the game after halftime.

Maxey Scores 32 as 76ers Erase 29-Point Deficit to Stun Cavaliers 114-106 in Home Opener
Tyrese Maxey scored 32 points and Joel Embiid added 24 as the Philadelphia 76ers wiped out a 29-point deficit in their home opener and stunned the Cleveland Cavaliers 114-106 on Thursday night.
LeBron James had 17 points and 10 rebounds in the biggest comeback win of his career, and fellow newcomer Jaylen Brown scored 21 points, 10 of them in the fourth quarter, as Philadelphia improved to 2-0 with wins over the NBA champion New York Knicks and the Eastern Conference finalist Cavaliers to open the season.
Cleveland controlled the first half of its season opener, racing to a 35-18 lead after one quarter and stretching the margin to 69-40 late in the second quarter behind 22 first-half points from Donovan Mitchell. The Cavaliers led 69-45 at halftime.
The game flipped completely after the break. Philadelphia outscored Cleveland 69-37 in the second half, cutting the deficit to 90-82 after three quarters, and Embiid’s running floater with 7:20 remaining pulled the 76ers within 95-94. Embiid followed with a 15-footer on the next trip for Philadelphia’s first lead of the night, and Brown scored the next six points as Maxey capped a 15-0 run that put the 76ers ahead 104-95.
Cleveland got within 106-102 down the stretch, but Mitchell missed two free throws and Maxey and Brown scored on the next two trips to push the lead back to eight.
Mitchell finished with 32 points and 10 rebounds for the Cavaliers. Evan Mobley added 18 points, James Harden scored 16 and Jarrett Allen had 14.
Maxey, who also had six assists, was relentless at both ends and sparked the decisive fourth-quarter run. The 76ers won the third quarter 37-21 and the fourth 32-16.
Up next: the Cavaliers host Brooklyn on Saturday in their home opener. The 76ers stay home for back-to-back weekend games, Saturday against Milwaukee and Sunday against Detroit.
