Tony Gilroy to Receive Filmmaker Tribute as Montclair Film Festival Closes

The Montclair Film Festival closes its 2026 edition by honoring one of the sharpest storytellers working in film and television. On Sunday, October 25, writer and director Tony Gilroy receives the festival’s 2026 Filmmaker Tribute.

The presentation follows a screening of the festival’s Closing Night Film, Behemoth!, at the Montclair Kimberly Academy Upper School, and includes a Q&A with Gilroy moderated by Stephen Colbert. The festival saluted what it called “an unclassifiably brilliant career as one of the cinema’s finest storytellers.”

Gilroy’s fingerprints are on some of the most respected mainstream filmmaking of the past three decades: he wrote the Bourne films and directed The Bourne Legacy, earned Oscar nominations for writing and directing Michael Clayton, wrote and directed Duplicity, and most recently created and ran Andor, the Star Wars series widely praised as a high-water mark for franchise television.

“This year’s Montclair Film Festival Honors feature artists whose work has given shape to contemporary cinema,” said the festival’s Artistic Director and Co-Head, Tom Hall. The 14th festival runs October 16–25 in Montclair, New Jersey.

Director Beth de Araújo

The Montclair Film Festival has named Beth de Araújo its 2026 Breakthrough Director, honoring the filmmaker on Sunday, October 18 at The Bellevue Theatre following a screening of her new film, Josephine.

In presenting the award, the festival praised de Araújo’s “compassionate and deeply felt exploration of trauma, humanity, and the responsibilities that bind us to one another” — the qualities that have marked her rise as one of the most closely watched American directors of her generation.

De Araújo first drew major attention as the writer and director of Soft & Quiet, her blistering debut feature, which premiered at SXSW and earned her a place on year-end lists and awards ballots for breakthrough filmmaking. Josephine is her second feature, and the Montclair honor — part of the festival’s annual Honors program, which this year also salutes Ava DuVernay and Tony Gilroy — confirms her standing as a director whose work travels.

The 14th Montclair Film Festival runs October 16–25 in Montclair, New Jersey.
