Wake Forest Places Head Baseball Coach Tom Walter on Leave
Wake Forest has placed longtime head baseball coach Tom Walter on leave, the university confirmed this week.
“Wake Forest baseball head coach Tom Walter is on leave effective October 14, 2026,” university spokesperson Ryan Madden said in a statement. “Additional information will be shared when it becomes appropriate. In accordance with University policy Wake Forest Athletics will have no further comment at this time.” No reason for the move has been disclosed.
Assistant coach Eric Niesen, who works with the pitching staff, has assumed day-to-day leadership of the program, with support from Executive Associate Athletic Director and sport administrator Craig Zakrzewski. Niesen returned to his alma mater as a coach before the 2026 season after serving as director of pitching for the Houston Astros.
Walter has led the Demon Deacons since June 2009 and is in his 18th season with the program. He owns 536 wins at Wake Forest and a 964-738-1 career record that includes head coaching stops at George Washington and New Orleans. His 2023 team reached the Men’s College World Series, Walter was named the ACC Coach of the Year that season, and Wake Forest has appeared in five consecutive NCAA Tournaments.

Florida State Splits With North Florida to Wrap Up Opening Fall Ball Weekend
Florida State wrapped up its opening weekend of fall ball with a split against North Florida on October 17 at Dick Howser Stadium, winning the first six-inning game 7-1 before the Ospreys took the second 7-2. Combined with Friday’s sweep of Jacksonville, the Seminoles won three of their four fall ball games on the weekend.
Freshman outfielder Genson Veras stayed hot, collecting two hits and two RBI with a home run – a solo shot that put Florida State back in front in the opener. Senior outfielder Brody DeLamielleure went 3-for-4 on the day, and junior catcher Coy Clements drove in a pair of runs.
The pitching staff continued to impress. Senior left-hander Payton Manca threw 2.0 scoreless, hitless innings, junior Jordan Martinez added 2.0 shutout innings with three strikeouts, and freshmen Spencer Krasner and Donovan Thiery each tossed a no-hit inning, with Thiery lighting up the radar gun at 97-99 mph.
Saturday was also Fan Day in Tallahassee, with autographs and kids running the bases after the games. Florida State’s fall schedule continues October 24 against South Florida in Clearwater and concludes with the Garnet & Gold All-Star Game on October 30.
