Adam Sweet Built a Studio in a Victorian Mortuary — Then Recorded “Mortuary Blues” in It

Published

Every album has a story. Adam Sweet’s third studio album Mortuary Blues has a building: the Exeter blues-rocker bought a derelict Victorian mortuary and converted it into his own recording space, The Mortuary Studio — then named the record after it.

Released October 2 on CD, vinyl, digital and streaming via his own Mortuary Music label, the album was tracked live with his touring band — Garry Kroll on drums, Paddy Blight on bass and Tom Hughes on organ — at Momentum Studios in Plymouth with engineer Josiah J Manning. Singles “Backstop,” co-written with Nashville songwriter Hugh Moffatt, and the title track preceded it; the title track is playlisted on Joe Bonamassa’s “Cutting Edge Blues” Spotify playlist.

The songs take on the cost of living, burnout, a changing planet and the future of the creative industries — heavy subjects from a guitarist who records in a beautiful room with a heavy history. Sweet is currently touring the UK in support of the album.
