Bishop Moore owns Class 4A Region 2 again. The top seeded Hornets swept second seeded Satellite 3-0 on Wednesday night to win the regional championship, taking the sets 25-8, 25-12 and 25-20 at home in Orlando.

It was the third meeting between the teams this season, and Bishop Moore won all three. The Hornets swept the season opener on August 18 and beat the Scorpions again in four sets in the district final on October 16.

Satellite arrived playing its best volleyball of the year. The Scorpions had won 18 of their last 21 matches and were playing in their first regional final since 2021, with a trip to the state semifinals one win away. Satellite was also chasing the program’s first Final Four appearance since 2003. Bishop Moore ended the run quickly, racing through the first two sets before Satellite pushed the third set to 25-20. When the Hornets posed for their championship photo afterward, the gym scoreboard behind them still told the story of the finish: Home 25, Guest 20, in the third set.

Both teams had swept their way through the earlier rounds to reach the final. Bishop Moore took down Lake Wales and Mount Dora in straight sets, and Satellite did the same to Lecanto and River Ridge. Something had to give on Wednesday, and it gave early.

As a team, the Hornets posted 37 kills, nine blocks and five aces. Sophomore Harper Lanza led Satellite with seven kills. Sophomore Kenzie Little added five kills, and senior Lily Ruda finished with four kills and one ace in the final match of her high school career.

“Bishop Moore played lights out,” Satellite head coach Daren Bolton said after the match. It was also the final match of Bolton’s career. He is stepping down after 17 seasons as a head coach, closing a run that brought Satellite to the doorstep of the Final Four.

The title is Bishop Moore’s third regional championship in four years. The Hornets, now 22-7, advance to the Class 4A state semifinals in Winter Haven. Satellite finished its season at 22-7.

A crosstown rivalry got one more postseason chapter on Wednesday night, and it needed all five sets. Host Newbury Park held off Thousand Oaks 3-2 in a CIF Southern Section Division 3 quarterfinal, winning 25-16, 25-20, 21-25, 22-25 and 15-6 to reach the semifinals.

Newbury Park controlled the first two sets behind strong serving that kept the Lancers out of system. Thousand Oaks refused to fold. The Lancers took the third set, then won the fourth on a set point ace from junior Sam Caenepeel to force a fifth.

The Panthers owned the deciding set. Laney Knopp drilled five kills with an ace in the fifth, and setter Keira Overbeck served a pair of clutch aces as Newbury Park pulled away 15-6. Charley Knupp put down the final kill of the night, off an Overbeck back set, to end it.

Knopp finished with a match high 24 kills. Knupp added 17 and sophomore Emmery Reynolds 15, as the Panthers’ three pin hitters combined for 56 kills. Thousand Oaks was led by Halle Bryce with 17 kills and 12 digs and Saylor Halvorsen with 12 kills and 13 digs.

The match was the final one of Thousand Oaks head coach James Park’s career; he had announced before the season that he would retire at the end of it. Newbury Park, coached by Chris Forrest, improved to 33-9 and moved on to play Valley Christian in the Division 3 semifinals in Cerritos on Saturday, October 31.
