Guiding Light: A Journey Through Irish Lights’ ‘Haulbowline’

Published

on

Irish Lights, the transatlantic electronic duo comprised of Benjamin Fox and Gordon Cooper, return with their latest single, “Haulbowline,” a haunting exploration of the ethereal landscapes that inspired its creation. Drawing from the storied lighthouse of the same name, this track beautifully encapsulates the isolation and beauty of life by the sea.

From the very first notes, “Haulbowline” envelops listeners in a soundscape that feels both vast and intimate. The combination of melancholic acoustic guitar and atmospheric synths creates a rich tapestry of sound, evoking the imagery of a solitary boat drifting through misty waters. The duo’s signature style shines through in this instrumental piece, characterized by intricate textures that mirror the gentle lapping of waves and the whisper of wind, offering a meditative and immersive experience.

The historical significance of Haulbowline Lighthouse, perched at the entrance to Carlingford Lough in Northern Ireland, adds depth to the track. This 200-year-old beacon, known for being the first fully automated lighthouse in Ireland, symbolizes resilience and the enduring connection between humanity and the sea. The intriguing Norse origins of the name, translating to “aunt of the Eel,” add another layer of narrative that invites listeners to delve deeper into the stories woven into the music.

Recorded across two continents, in Co. Mayo and Detroit, “Haulbowline” is the first glimpse into the duo’s forthcoming album, set for release in 2025. It signifies a new chapter for Irish Lights, showcasing their evolution in crafting immersive soundscapes that draw from personal and historical narratives.

In “Haulbowline,” Irish Lights have masterfully created a sonic journey that resonates with themes of solitude, nature, and connection. As the track unfolds, listeners are invited to lose themselves in its haunting beauty, with the comforting assurance that these musical lighthouses will guide them home, no matter how dark the waters may seem. Prepare to be transported to a place of serene introspection—Irish Lights have illuminated a path worth exploring.

Last Train to play UK dates!

Published

After ‘Weathering’ and ‘The Big Picture’, acclaimed Lyon-based 4-piece Last Train‘s new album is a direct reflection of raw anger. Recorded in a crumbling, unheated chateau, ‘III’ channels frustration into meticulously composed rock. Formed in the 2010s, Jean-Noël Scherrer, Julien Peultier, Timothée Gérard and Antoine Baschung gained a strong following with their first two albums and toured with Muse and Placebo. In 2024 they released ‘Original Motion Picture Soundtrack’, an orchestral reworking of their songs, but the new album marks their true return to form as a rock band. Tracks like the first two singles ‘Home’ and ‘The Plan’ combine rock energy with melody, balancing emotional depth and anger.

With ‘III’, Last Train have produced a radical and authentic third album, far from the aseptic super-productions. With ‘One by One’ – the focus track, you’ll feel right in the band’s rehearsal room: screeching feedback, punchy drums, overflowing bass and incisive choruses. Provocative as it is, the track embodies a frantic race: the train will go on, with or without us. Mature, confident and increasingly daring, these ambassadors of French rock continue their dizzying ascent, no matter how high the wall!

The band are touring Europe extensively this year in support of the album, including a headline London show and appearances at Focus Wales and The Great Escape Festival. Don’t miss the chance to catch them live in all of their glory.

Upcoming UK shows:

8.05: Focus Wales, Wrexham (20:15- Ty Pawb)

10.05: Focus Wales, Wrexham (19:25- Penny Black)

12.05: The Grace, London (Headline show)

16.05: The Great Escape, Brighton (7pm at The Wing at The Brighton Centre).
