Grammy-winning singer and actress Jill Scott has been tapped to join the cast of the upcoming CW drama Black Lightning from Salim Akil, Mara Brock Akil, Greg Berlanti and Warner Bros. TV. Scott will join as DC villain Lady Eve.

Based on the DC character created by Tony Isabella with Trevor Von Eeden, Black Lightning centers on Jefferson Pierce (Cress Williams). He made his choice: He hung up the suit and his secret identity years ago, but with a daughter, Jennifer, hellbent on justice and a star student being recruited by a local gang, he’ll be pulled back into the fight as the wanted vigilante and DC legend Black Lightning. Nafessa Williams (Code Black), China Anne McClain (House of Payne) and Christine Adams star.

Black Lightning is the first series to feature an African-American superhero as its lead on a major network (Netflix, of course, has the Marvel drama Luke Cage)

Scott’s Lady Eve can be traced back to the Kobra Cult in comic lore. In Black Lightning, Lady Eve will be the bridge between Tobias Whale (Marvin “Krondon” Jones III) and a secret group of corrupt leaders. Always a consummate professional, Lady Eve presents herself in Freeland as the owner of a funeral parlor, but quickly becomes an adversary to Black Lightning.

Scott is a multi-Grammy-award winner, having successfully crossed over to acting. In 2014, she starred in the film Get On Up as the second wife of James Brown. She also appeared as the lead role in the BBC/HBO series The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency. She starred in the Lifetime movie With This Ring alongside Regina Hall, and is set to star in Flint, Lifetime’s original movie about the water-contamination crisis in Flint, MI.

Black Lightning premieres midseason on The CW, and we can’t wait to tune in!
