Kevin Burt’s new record announces itself with a story about needing space, and that’s exactly what he gives it. “This Trip”, out via Gulf Coast Records and cut in Waterloo, Iowa with producer Michael Cutsforth, is Burt stripping his sound down to guitar, harmonica, and that voice everybody in the blues world already knows by name.

Burt isn’t new to this. He’s an Iowa Blues Hall of Fame inductee, a 2026 Blues Music Award winner, and a former International Blues Challenge champion. He’s landed multiple records on the Billboard Blues Top 10, and this year the blues community voted him Acoustic Artist of the Year through the Blues Foundation. None of that happens by accident; it happens because he’s spent decades turning hard living into songs people actually feel.

Kevin’s previous studio work leaned on fuller band arrangements. This one goes the other direction, back toward the setup that made him famous in small rooms in the first place: one man, one guitar, one harmonica, and nowhere to hide.

“This record needed space,” Burt says. “I wanted the songs to breathe. I wanted people to hear every word, to sit with me in that moment and hear what the stories are trying to say.”

You can hear that intention in how the songs are built. There’s no clutter here, no arrangement doing the emotional work for him. When Burt sings about heartbreak or resilience or plain fear, it lands because there’s nothing else competing for your attention.

That commitment to connection runs through everything Burt does outside the studio too. He’s spent years teaching through Blues in the Schools programs, working on Smithsonian-backed education projects, and introducing younger listeners to where this music actually came from. This Trip feels like an extension of that same instinct: bring people in, don’t shut them out.

Lyrically, the record doesn’t flinch. Love, heartbreak, joy, fear, resilience; Burt writes about all of it without varnish, and he sings like a man who’s lived every line rather than borrowed it. There’s a gratitude threaded through the whole thing too, the kind that comes from someone who’s weathered real career highs and real personal setbacks and still shows up to the stage and the studio with something left to say.
