MLS Playoff Picture: Nashville and Vancouver Set the Pace as Decision Day Looms
The road to MLS Cup is set. With the regular season ending on Decision Day, Saturday November 7, the Audi 2026 MLS Cup Playoffs will follow the format supporters now know well: the top seven teams in each conference go straight into the Round One Best-of-3 Series, the eighth and ninth seeds meet in single-elimination Wild Card matches on November 18, and everyone else goes home.
Round One runs from November 20 to December 2, the conference semifinals follow on December 5-6, the conference finals on December 11-12, and MLS Cup will be played on Friday December 18, hosted by the highest remaining seed.
Nashville SC have already locked up the Eastern Conference’s No. 1 seed for the first time in club history, and with it home-field advantage through the Eastern playoffs. Inter Miami, second in the East behind Lionel Messi’s league-leading 25 goals, are set for a mouth-watering Round One meeting with Florida rivals Orlando City.
In the West, the Vancouver Whitecaps lead the way. The Caps clinched a fourth straight playoff berth, a club record, with a 1-1 draw at LAFC in which they played almost the entire match with 10 men, and with Brian White chasing the Golden Boot and Thomas Muller pulling the strings, the road to MLS Cup may well run through BC Place.

Sioux Falls Lincoln Wins Fourth Straight South Dakota Class AA Boys Title in Shootout Classic
Sioux Falls Lincoln’s dynasty survived its hardest test yet. The Patriots beat Watertown 2-1 in a penalty shootout on October 17 at the Allen Mitchell Athletic Complex in Watertown to win their fourth consecutive South Dakota Class AA boys soccer state championship.
On a cold, windy afternoon, Watertown, playing in front of their home crowd, struck first when senior Roger Carranza scored his 23rd goal of the season six minutes into the second half. Lincoln levelled with 5:46 remaining, Jacob Burchett converting a penalty kick, and after two scoreless overtime periods the title came down to a shootout.
Both teams converted their first four kicks. Then senior goalkeeper Opland Sonnichsen saved Watertown’s fifth attempt, from Xane Fligge, and Marlo Gerling buried the winner into the upper-right corner.
“We practice a lot,” Sonnichsen said. “I knew they were good penalty kickers, so I knew I would have to dive left and right. But we got the job done.”
The title is Lincoln’s sixth overall, tying Sioux Falls Christian’s state records for consecutive championships and total championships. Head coach Alex Nelson called it “a storybook ending for these seniors.” Watertown finish a historic 16-1-1 season, the program’s best, with 16 seniors playing their final high school match.
