MLS Saturday Preview: Messi and Miami Head to New York in Headline Clash
The headline act of the MLS weekend is in Harrison, New Jersey, where Lionel Messi and Inter Miami visit the New York Red Bulls on Saturday (5:30pm ET, MLS Season Pass on Apple TV).
Messi, 39, is authoring another absurd season: 25 goals and 14 assists, top of the Golden Boot race, and fresh from scoring twice in four second-half minutes, plus an assist, in a 3-1 win at Atlanta United. Miami have won three straight, have scored in 26 consecutive regular-season matches dating back to March, and own the league’s best attack with 73 goals, though they have also shipped 51. Messi is expected to feature despite a Friday trip to Spain to receive the Princess of Asturias Award for Sports.
The Red Bulls, ninth in the East and fighting for their playoff lives, need a response after a 2-0 home defeat to Toronto in which they conceded an own goal inside three minutes. Julian Hall, with 11 goals this season, is their main threat.
Elsewhere on Saturday, Eastern Conference champions Nashville SC, already locked into the East’s top seed, visit CF Montreal (12:30pm CT) as they chase the MLS single-season points record. With Decision Day set for November 7, every point in the playoff race matters now.

Sioux Falls Lincoln Wins Fourth Straight South Dakota Class AA Boys Title in Shootout Classic
Sioux Falls Lincoln’s dynasty survived its hardest test yet. The Patriots beat Watertown 2-1 in a penalty shootout on October 17 at the Allen Mitchell Athletic Complex in Watertown to win their fourth consecutive South Dakota Class AA boys soccer state championship.
On a cold, windy afternoon, Watertown, playing in front of their home crowd, struck first when senior Roger Carranza scored his 23rd goal of the season six minutes into the second half. Lincoln levelled with 5:46 remaining, Jacob Burchett converting a penalty kick, and after two scoreless overtime periods the title came down to a shootout.
Both teams converted their first four kicks. Then senior goalkeeper Opland Sonnichsen saved Watertown’s fifth attempt, from Xane Fligge, and Marlo Gerling buried the winner into the upper-right corner.
“We practice a lot,” Sonnichsen said. “I knew they were good penalty kickers, so I knew I would have to dive left and right. But we got the job done.”
The title is Lincoln’s sixth overall, tying Sioux Falls Christian’s state records for consecutive championships and total championships. Head coach Alex Nelson called it “a storybook ending for these seniors.” Watertown finish a historic 16-1-1 season, the program’s best, with 16 seniors playing their final high school match.
