The road to Mobile is officially open. The 2026 AHSAA girls flag football playoffs begin this week, with first round games spread across Monday through Thursday, Nov. 2 through 5, and every bracket in the state points at the same finish line: Tuesday, Dec. 1, at Hancock Whitney Stadium on the campus of the University of South Alabama in Mobile, where four state champions will be crowned in one day.

This is the first postseason played under the new split between public and private schools, and it gives the sport four championship brackets: Class 1A through 4A, Class 5A, Class 6A and the Private A/AA bracket. Around 150 schools fielded flag football teams in Alabama this fall, and the AHSAA made flag an official championship sport in 2024.

Championship day in Mobile runs from morning to night. The Private A/AA final opens the day at 10 a.m., followed by the Class 1A through 4A final at 1 p.m., the Class 5A final at 4 p.m. and the Class 6A final at 7 p.m. Flag football opens the AHSAA championship week in Mobile, with the tackle football finals following Dec. 2 through 5, and it is the first time the city has hosted the event.

The Class 6A bracket starts with eight teams resting on byes, including Gadsden City, Smiths Station, Spain Park, Daphne, Central-Phenix City, Fairhope, Grissom and Vestavia Hills. The 6A games on Tuesday include James Clemens at Hewitt-Trussville, Hazel Green at Prattville, Robertsdale at Enterprise and Sparkman at Hoover.

In Class 5A, Boaz hosts Mountain Brook behind the biggest upset of the final week, a win over Spain Park, and Northridge travels to Russell County. In Class 1A through 4A, Wenonah hosts Valley and region champion Tallassee hosts Greensboro. The Private A/AA bracket opens with games including Mobile Christian hosting Northside Methodist Academy.

Four brackets, one day, one stadium. By the night of Dec. 1, Alabama will have four new flag football champions.

James Clemens Gets the Hardest Draw in 6A: A Playoff Trip to Hewitt-Trussville

Every bracket has a draw nobody wants, and in Class 6A it belongs to James Clemens. The Jets travel to Hewitt-Trussville on Tuesday, Nov. 3 at 6 p.m. for a first round playoff game, a road trip confirmed on Hewitt-Trussville’s official athletics schedule.

James Clemens, from Madison, won six of its 14 games and closed the regular season the right way, with a 6-0 shutout win at Columbia on Oct. 27. The Jets’ wins include a 36-6 rout of Bob Jones, a 35-0 shutout of St. John Paul II, a 31-13 win over Mae Jemison on Oct. 20 and an 18-0 shutout of Hazel Green. The losses show the gap the Jets have to close. Gadsden City beat them 36-6 on Oct. 22, and Sparkman edged them 13-6 on Oct. 13.

Hewitt-Trussville is the standard on the other sideline. The Huskies are one of the powers of the 6A bracket, and the program’s flag account still points to the inaugural state title it won in 2021, before flag became an official AHSAA championship sport.

Three of the Jets’ six wins were shutouts, so the defense has traveled before. The game is also one of eight first round matchups in the Class 6A bracket, while eight other teams, including Spain Park and Smiths Station, sit out the week on byes and wait for the winners.

For James Clemens, the math is simple. The Jets have already shown they can pitch a shutout and score in bunches against their own level. Tuesday asks them to do it in the hardest building in the bracket.
