Area Crown on the Line: Calvary Day and Woodville-Tompkins Meet Wednesday Night
The Division 1 Area 2 championship will be decided in one night, between the two teams that have owned the Savannah area all season. Calvary Day visits Woodville-Tompkins on Wednesday, Nov. 4 at Islands Stadium, with the area crown and the area’s top seed for the state playoffs going to the winner. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
Woodville-Tompkins is 12 wins and four losses, and unbeaten in area play at seven wins and no losses. The home team tuned up with a 20-7 win over St. Vincent’s on Thursday, two days after a 13-12 loss to New Hampstead showed how thin the margin can be at the top of this race. Protecting home field on Wednesday is the whole season in one game for Woodville-Tompkins.
Calvary Day arrives at 14 wins and one loss, riding a ten game win streak. The Cavaliers survived Jenkins 20-19 in overtime on Thursday, the hardest test of the streak, and they carry a championship pedigree into the game. Calvary Day won the GHSA Division 1 title in 2020, the first season the state sanctioned the sport, and has been a fixture in the bracket ever since.
The quarterback duel headlines it. Calvary Day junior Page Stewart has thrown for 3,059 yards and 55 touchdowns this season, with 115 rushing yards and three rushing scores. Woodville-Tompkins counters with Leila Lino-Garcia, who had thrown 20 touchdown passes through Oct. 26, and defender Tracie Daniels, who has piled up 85 flag pulls, 21 of them for a loss. Stewart against that defense is the matchup that decides the area.
The winner takes the crown and the top seed into the GHSA state playoff openers on Nov. 18. The loser still goes to the bracket, but on the harder road. In a season full of statements, this is the last one the regular season gets to make.

James Clemens Gets the Hardest Draw in 6A: A Playoff Trip to Hewitt-Trussville
Every bracket has a draw nobody wants, and in Class 6A it belongs to James Clemens. The Jets travel to Hewitt-Trussville on Tuesday, Nov. 3 at 6 p.m. for a first round playoff game, a road trip confirmed on Hewitt-Trussville’s official athletics schedule.
James Clemens, from Madison, won six of its 14 games and closed the regular season the right way, with a 6-0 shutout win at Columbia on Oct. 27. The Jets’ wins include a 36-6 rout of Bob Jones, a 35-0 shutout of St. John Paul II, a 31-13 win over Mae Jemison on Oct. 20 and an 18-0 shutout of Hazel Green. The losses show the gap the Jets have to close. Gadsden City beat them 36-6 on Oct. 22, and Sparkman edged them 13-6 on Oct. 13.
Hewitt-Trussville is the standard on the other sideline. The Huskies are one of the powers of the 6A bracket, and the program’s flag account still points to the inaugural state title it won in 2021, before flag became an official AHSAA championship sport.
Three of the Jets’ six wins were shutouts, so the defense has traveled before. The game is also one of eight first round matchups in the Class 6A bracket, while eight other teams, including Spain Park and Smiths Station, sit out the week on byes and wait for the winners.
For James Clemens, the math is simple. The Jets have already shown they can pitch a shutout and score in bunches against their own level. Tuesday asks them to do it in the hardest building in the bracket.
