Plant Is Winning Again at Exactly the Right Time of the Season
Every coach in Florida says the same thing in August: it is not how you start, it is how you finish. If that is true, the Plant Panthers are timing their season just about perfectly.
Plant has won two straight games to climb to 5-3, and the Panthers have done it in style — a 42-0 shutout of Leto on October 9, followed by a 48-7 rout of Spoto on the road on October 16. Two wins, 90 points scored, seven points allowed. That is what a team finding its stride looks like.
The turnaround means more because of what came before it. Plant’s schedule has been one of the toughest in Hillsborough County: the Panthers lost to Tampa Bay Tech and Armwood, the county’s two state-ranked heavyweights, and dropped tight games while finding their footing in September. Plant’s other results show the quality that was always there — a season-opening 33-26 win over Manatee, a 34-8 win at Hillsborough, and a gritty 13-7 district win at Durant.
Now the pieces are coming together at both ends. The offense that managed 13 points against Durant in September has hung 42 and 48 in back-to-back weeks. The defense that had to chase Armwood and Tech has pitched a shutout and allowed a single touchdown across its last eight quarters.
The finish to the regular season is no picnic: Bloomingdale visits on October 23 in a district game with real standings weight, and the Panthers close at home against Sumner on October 30 — a rivalry-flavored finale between two programs playing their best football right now.
Plant football carries a proud tradition in South Tampa, with four state championships in the program’s history. This year’s Panthers will not be handed anything — but a team that peaks in late October is a team nobody wants to draw in November, and Plant is peaking right on schedule.

Miller Grove Wolverines Hunting a Strong Finish After a Season of Fights
The Miller Grove Wolverines opened their season with a statement, and they have been fighting ever since. A 31-0 shutout of Chamblee in the opener showed what this Lithonia team can be, and the Wolverines have spent the fall proving that night was no fluke.
Miller Grove owns a 35-6 road win at McNair and a 20-8 win at Carver in Atlanta, victories built on defense and toughness. Look at those three wins together and a pattern emerges: Chamblee scored zero, McNair scored six and Carver scored eight. When the Wolverines win, they win with a defense that gives up almost nothing, and that identity travels anywhere. At 3-4, with 131 points scored and 135 allowed, nearly every Wolverines game this season has been a genuine fight, decided by which team made the plays late.
That includes the tough nights. The Wolverines fell 42-10 to a strong Columbia team on October 16 and dropped a 28-21 heartbreaker at M.L. King in an all-DeKalb battle earlier this season. Those are the kinds of games a program learns from.
That defensive identity is worth repeating, because it is rare: across their three wins, the Wolverines have allowed a total of 14 points. Fourteen. In an era of spread offenses and video-game scores, Miller Grove wins the old-fashioned way, with tackling, discipline and a defense that takes points personally. That travels in November, and it gives the Wolverines a real chance in every game left on the schedule.
The closing stretch gives Miller Grove every chance to finish the right way. South Atlanta visits on Friday, October 23, then the Wolverines travel to Cedar Grove on October 30 before closing at home against Redan.
Three games, three chances to turn a season of fights into a winning finish. In Lithonia, the Wolverines and their families have every reason to believe that is exactly what happens next.
