Reggie Benjamin’s Harmony In Blue: The Duets is the kind of album that feels instantly familiar. Across eight tracks, Benjamin takes a selection of well-loved songs and gives them a fresh lease of life through a colourful cast of collaborators, keeping the emphasis firmly on melody, emotion and the simple pleasure of a good song.

There’s plenty to enjoy along the way. ‘I Just Wanna Be Your Everything’ remains the obvious emotional centrepiece, with Benjamin bringing a warm, sincere delivery to the Andy Gibb classic. ‘The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face’ with Lisa Vanderpump has an intimate charm, while Joe Mantegna adds a suitably theatrical presence to ‘Send In The Clowns’. James Maslow’s take on ‘Love Yourself’ brings a lighter, more contemporary energy, and the closing ‘We’ve Only Just Begun’ with Iwona Benjamin provides a particularly personal finish.

What really comes across is Benjamin’s affection for the material. Harmony In Blue: The Duets isn’t trying to reinvent these songs beyond recognition; instead, it gives them room to breathe through new voices and personalities. The result is an easygoing, heartfelt collection that reminds us why these songs have lasted in the first place, sometimes, a great melody really does all the talking.
