Rihanna Built a Business, Not Just a Catalog: The Fenty Ownership Play
For most pop stars, the money plan is simple: sing, tour, repeat, and let the checks land where they land. Rihanna walked away from that plan at the height of her powers — she has not released a studio album since “Anti” in 2016 — and built something the touring business rarely produces: a fortune made of ownership. When Forbes first declared her a billionaire in 2021, estimating her net worth at $1.7 billion, the magazine was explicit about where the money sat. It was not the catalog. It was the companies.
The biggest of them is Fenty Beauty, launched in 2017 through LVMH’s Kendo brand incubator. The structure is the story. A typical celebrity beauty arrangement pays the famous face a royalty — a small percentage of sales for lending a name. Rihanna’s deal, as Forbes reported it, is a partnership in which she owns an estimated 50 percent of the company. Forbes valued Fenty Beauty at about $2.8 billion at the time of its billionaire assessment, which made her half the engine of her entire fortune. The brand’s commercial logic was as sharp as its ownership logic: it launched with 40 foundation shades in an industry that had largely ignored deeper skin tones, and Forbes reported it generated more than $550 million in revenue in 2018, its first full year — outselling rival celebrity lines that had treated inclusivity as an afterthought.
The pattern repeated at Savage X Fenty, her lingerie company. Forbes reported that the brand raised $115 million in funding in February 2021 at a valuation of about $1 billion, with Rihanna holding an estimated 30 percent stake — again, an owner’s position rather than an endorsement fee, with investors like LVMH and Jay-Z’s Marcy Ventures in the cap table beside her.
Forbes’ more recent estimates have her net worth at roughly $1.4 billion — lower than the 2021 peak, because private company valuations move with the market for consumer brands, and honest reporting should say so. But the lesson of the Fenty play does not depend on the exact figure. A royalty is rent on your own fame: it pays this year and stops when the deal stops. Equity is a deed. It can be valued, borrowed against, and sold. Rihanna traded the most reliable income in music — her own album cycle — for the riskier work of building companies she partly owns, in categories where her taste was the market research.
That is why this story runs in our Business section and not only our music pages. The charts made Rihanna famous. The fine print made her a billionaire — and the fine print said owner, not endorser.

Kylie Jenner Launches Khy “After Dark,” a 16-Piece Winter Collection Inspired by L.A. Nights
Kylie Jenner’s fashion label Khy has its winter moment. The brand launched “Khy After Dark,” a 16-piece eveningwear collection, worldwide on Tuesday (October 27), sold exclusively through the brand’s own web store at khy.com.
The capsule is built for the hours after sunset. Khy describes the drop as inspired by Los Angeles after hours — “a love letter to L.A. nights” — and Jenner echoed the theme in her launch post: “LA nights have always been such a big part of my inspiration and i loved bringing that feeling into this collection.” The lineup leans into moody, after-dark glamour: sculpted tailoring, plush faux fur, layered knitwear, oversized bombers and animal-print accents across coats, dresses, cardigans and tops. The standout piece is the floor-sweeping Marmont Sculpted Coat. The campaign, photographed by Quentin de Briey in the Los Angeles hills, puts Jenner herself in the collection’s statement outerwear against the city lights.
After Dark also underlines how Khy does business. Rather than running on traditional celebrity endorsements, the label operates through designer collaborations, partnering with creative founders and peer brands — including footwear label Gia Borghini and Francesca Aiello’s Frankies Bikinis — to merge their aesthetics with Jenner’s vision. The winter drop keeps up a rapid release cadence: earlier this year Khy expanded into warm-weather staples with the silk-and-jersey “Dear Summer, Love Khy” line, then returned to swim with Frankies Bikinis on their second collaborative capsule, “Fever Dream.”
The timing is deliberate. The launch caps a headline week for Jenner, who made her runway debut at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show on October 18 wearing the $50 million Jacob & Co. diamond Fantasy Bra — and now channels that fashion spotlight straight into her own label. Khy After Dark is available now at khy.com.
