Suki Summer Redefines Pop-Rock with Gritty Realness in ‘Nothing At All’

Published

on

Suki Summer’s new release, ‘Nothing At All’, dives into the complexities of modern relationships with a rebellious spirit and unapologetic honesty. The track is a breath of fresh air in the pop-rock genre, blending 70s rock riffs and 80s synth with lyrics that challenge societal expectations of women. It’s a unique, genre-blending sound that feels both nostalgic and current, nodding to the past while speaking directly to today’s listener.

Opening with a striking guitar riff, the song quickly establishes its place in Suki’s unique soundscape, paying homage to the gritty feel of rock legends while still making space for her own voice. Her approach is reminiscent of the fearlessness that defined 80s rock icons, yet Suki’s modern take brings something fresh to the table. Her lyrics are straightforward and refreshing, refusing to shy away from the realities of relationships and personal boundaries.

The production quality of ‘Nothing At All’ complements the track’s rebellious attitude, with the blend of raw guitar and synthesized layers feeling authentic rather than overproduced. There’s an intentional roughness to the sound that adds to the song’s boldness, as if Suki is inviting her listeners into a live experience. This quality is rare in the polished world of pop-rock and is part of what makes Suki’s sound so appealing.

Vocally, Suki’s dry, controlled style brings depth and maturity to the track, contrasting with the typically polished delivery of many pop artists. Her harmonies add a layer of richness, giving the chorus a memorable quality that sticks long after the song ends. There’s a sense of pride in her voice, as if she’s standing firm in her convictions without needing approval.

Through ‘Nothing At All’, Suki challenges the double standards that often plague perceptions of women’s relationships. Her message is clear: women should have the freedom to enjoy relationships on their terms, without expectations. This unapologetic stance is what makes the track so relatable and empowering, as it speaks directly to listeners tired of outdated narratives.

‘Nothing At All’ is a confident, refreshing addition to Suki Summer’s growing catalog. With its bold lyrics, raw instrumentation, and fearless message, the single cements Suki’s place as a standout voice in modern pop-rock. Her fusion of nostalgic sounds with current themes is powerful, proving that she’s an artist with both a message and a distinct musical identity.

Waz-u drops ambient gem ‘Vermillion’ ft. Lilyg

London-based multi-instrumentalist and producer Waz-u returns with his second album, Preludes: Dusk Psalms, set for release on 16 May 2025 via independent label Biodiversity. The 15-track record further refines the artistic depth of his debut, blending electronic textures and classical compositional techniques in an intricate, immersive listening experience.

Ahead of the album release, Waz-u is dropping an exclusive vocal version of ‘Vermillion: G Major’ from the album, accompanied by its original instrumental version. ‘Vermillion’ with Lilyg will be released on 18 April 2025, evoking intimate indie-folk and pop and follows the release of a vocal version of ‘Lament’ with Tom Norrington. ‘The singles are a way to give a voice to the atmosphere of the record and to lyrically encapsulate some of the themes explored,’ explains Waz-u. ‘Lily and Tom are good friends of mine and have both been listening to early iterations of these preludes – it felt right to involve them directly on this record.’

‘Preludes: Dusk Psalms’ marks a new branch of Waz-u’s emerging sound, guided by the duality of tradition and innovation. Combining his musical roots in early ‘90s dub techno and classical music, the album weaves carefully layered synthesizers and electronics to evoke the ambience of sacred music — from the gentle timbres of a choir or an organ to the quiet, open, and reverberating spaces of a church. Also featured throughout the album is experimental musician G9 LUV, who creates textures and drones by bowing his bass guitar, resulting in cello-like sounds. The release follows Waz-u’s 2024 debut LP, Prayer For Dawn, which merged dub, techno, and electronica in an exploration of the ritualistic traditions associated with both organized religion and dance.

Bringing the album’s themes to life, Waz-u will celebrate the release of Preludes: Dusk Psalms with a special performance at Our Holy Redeemer in Clerkenwell, London on 14 May 2025. Set against the church’s resonant acoustics, the event will feature live performance arrangements, including a choir, with further details to be announced soon.
