AFC West in Week 8: Chiefs and Broncos Meet in Denver With First Place on the Line

Kansas City Chiefs running back Kenneth Walker III breaks away from Denver Broncos defenders.

The AFC West could change hands on Sunday afternoon, in the thin air of Denver, in the biggest game of the weekend.

The standings: Kansas City Chiefs 5-1, Denver Broncos 5-2, Las Vegas Raiders 3-4, Los Angeles Chargers 0-6.

Kansas City at Denver kicks off at 4:25 PM ET at Empower Field at Mile High. The Chiefs won the first meeting 31-10 at Arrowhead in Week 1, when running back Kenneth Walker III exploded for nearly 200 scrimmage yards and two scores in his Kansas City debut. A second win gives the Chiefs the season sweep, a 4-0 record inside the division and a firm grip on first place. A Denver win flips the standings and puts the Broncos on top. Kansas City is also playing angry: the Chiefs took their first loss of the season last week in Seattle. Denver comes in hot off a 30-16 win over Arizona, with quarterback Bo Nix running for a 62-yard touchdown in that game.

The rest of the division plays supporting roles. Las Vegas (3-4) visits the New York Jets (2-5) at 1:00 PM ET, needing a win to stay in the wild card picture. The Chargers (0-6), the league’s only winless team, visit the Rams at SoFi Stadium at 4:05 PM ET still searching for answers, with the fewest points scored in the NFL and the most turnovers.

First place, a season sweep, and bragging rights are all on one field in Denver. That is Week 8 in the AFC West.

NFC West in Week 8: 49ers Lead Big, Rams Host the Winless Chargers at SoFi Stadium

Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford throws a pass.

The NFC West has a clear boss and a long weekend for everybody chasing them. San Francisco watches Week 8 from the couch with the division’s biggest lead.

The standings: San Francisco 49ers 6-1, Seattle Seahawks 4-3, Los Angeles Rams 3-4, Arizona Cardinals 2-5.

The 49ers, two games clear of Seattle, have the week off after taking their first loss of the season at Atlanta. Nobody in the division can touch them this weekend, so the race is for second place and wild card position.

The Rams host the Chargers at SoFi Stadium at 4:05 PM ET, the first regular season meeting between the two Los Angeles teams in their shared building since New Year’s Day 2023. The Rams (3-4) lead the NFL in total yards, and quarterback Matthew Stafford leads all passers with 1,989 yards. The Chargers (0-6) are the league’s last winless team, with the fewest points scored in football and the most turnovers, 15 of them. The Rams get back to .500 with a win, and Sean McVay’s team has spent all week saying it will not overlook a desperate opponent.

Arizona (2-5) visits the Dallas Cowboys (3-4) at 1:00 PM ET, and Seattle (4-3) closes the week on Monday night at home against the Chicago Bears (8:15 PM ET), a game with real wild card weight for both conferences.

San Francisco is in control. Week 8 decides who gets to call themselves the challenger.
