Brightline Is Coming to the Space Coast: $57 Million Federal Grant Funds a New Cocoa Station

Published

Brightline is coming to the Space Coast. The Federal Railroad Administration has designated $416 million in federal funds for grade-crossing safety upgrades and construction of a new Brightline station in Florida. The package includes a $57 million award to the city of Cocoa to build a new Brightline station, a multi-use access road and a new segment of double track.

The larger share goes to crossings: a $356 million award to the Florida Department of Transportation funds new signage, lighting and physical barriers at 910 grade crossings, and the state of Florida will provide $100 million to help fund the projects. The FDOT award is part of the FRA’s larger $5.3 billion rail infrastructure investment announced in August 2026, which includes $2 billion in terminated federal funding originally designated for the California high-speed rail project.

“This new station will make it easier for people to travel to and from the Space Coast while supporting our growing community,” said U.S. Rep. Mike Haridopolos (R-Fla.), who said the station is expected to have up to a $350 million annual economic impact and support 3,500 jobs.

The station will be an in-line stop on Brightline’s existing route between Orlando and South Florida, expanding intercity passenger rail access in Brevard County, and the funding was announced during an event in Cocoa on October 7. FOX 35 Orlando reported the station is planned near State Road 528 and is expected to serve as a transportation hub connecting travelers with Cocoa, Port Canaveral and Brightline destinations in South Florida — and that the city of Cocoa, rather than Brightline, will own the station, while Brightline operates it.

For travelers, the payoff is access: coverage of the award noted the new station will provide easier access to the Kennedy Space Center and Port Canaveral for visitors exploring Florida’s Space Coast or heading to a cruise ship.
