CA7RIEL & Paco Amoroso Do It Again: Seven Latin Grammy Nominations for ‘Free Spirits’

Published

Lightning has struck twice for CA7RIEL & Paco Amoroso. For the second consecutive year, the Argentine duo has pulled in seven Latin Grammy nominations, this time for Free Spirits, the gloriously unpredictable album they released in mid-March on 5020 Records. They will be among the most-nominated artists in the room when the 27th Annual Latin Grammy Awards take over the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on November 12.

The haul touches every corner of the record. Free Spirits is nominated for Album of the Year and Best Alternative Music Album, “Ha Ha” is up for Record of the Year, and “Hasta Jesús Tuvo Un Mal Día,” their collaboration with Sting, competes for Song of the Year and Best Pop/Rock Song. “Beto’s Horns” landed in Best Latin Electronic Music Performance, and Free Spirits (the film), the companion movie starring the duo alongside Jack Black, Sting and Anderson .Paak, is nominated for Best Long Form Music Video.

Free Spirits is the sound of two artists refusing to sit still. Across the album, CA7RIEL and Paco stretch their blend of funk, rock, pop and electronic chaos into something bigger and more emotionally open, with Fred again.. also among the collaborators. Pitchfork called the record “a chaotic thrill ride,” and that energy has turned the pair into one of the most magnetic live acts to come out of Argentina this century. They arrive at the awards as Grammy winners already, with five Latin Grammys to their name.

The stage is where the argument gets settled. Their Live Nation-promoted world run has been crossing Latin America, North America, the United Kingdom and Europe, with stops at Red Rocks Amphitheatre, Radio City Music Hall, the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles, O2 Academy Brixton in London and Movistar Arena in Madrid. This month the tour reached Japan, where the duo thanked fans for a run of sold-out energy before heading home.

Seven nominations, two years in a row, is not a hot streak anymore. It is a position. On November 12, CA7RIEL & Paco Amoroso get to find out how many of those seven turn into trophies, and either way, Free Spirits has already done its job: it made the duo impossible to categorize and even harder to ignore.

Xavi Earns His First Latin Grammy Nominations With ‘Dosis,’ Plus a Performance Slot in Las Vegas

The face of romantic tumbados just got his first Latin Grammy invitations. Xavi, the Phoenix-born singer-songwriter who helped redefine corridos for a new generation, has earned the first two Latin Grammy nominations of his career: Best Contemporary Mexican Music Album for Dosis and Best Regional Song for “No Capea,” his collaboration with Grupo Frontera. On November 12, he will also perform at the 27th Annual Latin Grammy Awards at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Dosis, his nineteen-track sophomore album released in May through Interscope Records, is the bigger swing. After breaking through with the viral acoustic hit “La Víctima” and the follow-up smash “La Diabla,” and establishing himself with his debut album Next, Xavi used Dosis to widen the frame, keeping the requinto-led, guitar-first heart of his tumbado romántico style while pushing its production and songwriting into new territory. “No Capea,” which he co-wrote, pairs him with Grupo Frontera, one of the genre’s biggest groups, and has become a streaming-era anthem of its own.

“To see Dosis and ‘No Capea’ celebrated alongside artists I admire is a dream come true,” Xavi said when the nominations were announced. “I dedicate these nominations to my grandfather, who first introduced me to music. Making him proud means everything.” It is a fitting note for an artist who began composing as a teenager in Phoenix and built his audience one phone-recorded song at a time.

The live show has kept pace with the records. His X tour has been filling arenas across Mexico, and in September he joined Natanael Cano on stage in Guadalajara, a meeting of the two artists most responsible for the corridos tumbados era.

First nominations are a before-and-after moment in any career. Xavi arrives in Las Vegas with two of them, a performance slot on the telecast and a sophomore album the Academy itself has certified as one of the year’s essential Mexican music records. The next chapter starts November 12.
