Paul Giamatti Joins “Grandgear,” the First English-Language Film From “Godzilla Minus One” Director Takashi Yamazaki
Paul Giamatti is joining one of the most closely watched productions on the horizon. The acclaimed actor has been announced as a new cast addition to Grandgear, the upcoming film from Japanese director Takashi Yamazaki.
Yamazaki, who won worldwide acclaim with Godzilla Minus One, also wrote the script for Grandgear, which will be his first English-language film. Plot and character details are being kept under wraps, adding to the intrigue around the project.
Giamatti is not the only new name attached. Also announced for the cast are Nico Parker, known for The Last of Us and How to Train Your Dragon, and Sam Nivola of The White Lotus. The additions point to an ensemble that mixes veteran star power with two of the most in-demand young actors working today.
The film is being produced by J.J. Abrams under his Bad Robot banner, and production is expected to commence in 2027. For Giamatti, one of the most respected performers of his generation, the role adds a major international production to his slate — and pairs him with a filmmaker whose stock has never been higher.
Yamazaki’s schedule is busy in the meantime: his Godzilla Minus Zero is due in theaters in November. With a secretive script, a heavyweight producer, and a cast now led in part by Giamatti, Grandgear is shaping up as a production the industry will be following closely well before cameras roll.
The casting also underlines the scale of Yamazaki’s step into English-language filmmaking. A first film in a new language is a significant move for any director; making it with an actor of Giamatti’s caliber — opposite rising names like Parker and Nivola — signals a production aiming squarely at a global audience.

“Money Heist” Star Jaime Lorente Begins Filming Netflix’s “Jotadé” Crime Thriller
Cameras are rolling on Jotadé, Netflix’s new Spanish crime-thriller miniseries — and the cast brings serious pedigree. Netflix Spain announced the start of filming on Oct. 26, with Money Heist star Jaime Lorente among the principal players.
The four-episode miniseries is adapted from Santiago Díaz’s bestselling novel saga, published by Alfaguara. It follows Jotadé, a brash and irreverent police officer whose loyalty runs to his colleagues and to his Roma community, as he investigates a brutal crime that conceals a dangerous criminal network.
Isaac Díaz leads the series in the title role. Aura Garrido plays Lucía, and veteran Jose Coronado plays Hilario Garza. Lorente — known worldwide as Denver in Money Heist, one of Netflix’s biggest international hits — plays Tony Garza. Javier Gutiérrez makes a special appearance, rounding out a cast stacked with some of Spanish screen acting’s most respected names.
Behind the camera, the production is equally established. Jotadé is produced by MOD Producciones, with Fernando Bovaira producing and Guillem Vidal-Folch as executive producer. The series is written by Isa Sánchez and Daniel Corpas, and directed by Daniel Calparsoro, whose work includes Bank Under Siege.
Netflix released first-look images alongside the filming announcement, offering an early glimpse of the series’ nocturnal, street-level tone. No premiere date has been announced yet. For Lorente, the role is a return to the crime world that made him a global name — this time inside a story rooted in family, loyalty, and community.
The compact four-episode format also fits the material: a single investigation, a closed set of family loyalties around the Garza name, and a bestselling novel saga underneath it. As production continues, Jotadé stands as one of the most notable Spanish-language series currently in front of cameras for Netflix.
