philojain Smashes It With “Riff Raff”
There’s a moment about forty seconds into “Riff Raff” where the bass hits so hard you genuinely wonder if your downstairs neighbour is about to knock. That’s not an accident. That’s a statement.
Amit Jain has been quietly building something with his solo project philojain, and this instrumental beast of a track is the clearest sign yet that he’s not remotely interested in playing it safe. No vocals, no chorus designed to stick in your head at the supermarket, just six strings and a low end so thick it practically has its own postcode.
The influences aren’t exactly hidden. Pantera, Lamb of God, Faith No More, a bit of Floyd floating around in the more atmospheric corners. But here’s the thing, “Riff Raff” doesn’t feel like a mood board. It feels like what happens after someone absorbs all of that and then sets fire to the rulebook. It sits somewhere between post rock and progressive metal without ever fully committing to either, which is precisely what makes it interesting.
The guitar work is relentless in the best way. Riff after riff builds until the whole thing becomes this enormous, aggressive wall of noise that somehow never loses focus. Then it pivots. Fast and technical, then slow and crushing, then back again before you’ve had time to adjust.
Jain plays everything himself and produces it all too. You can hear that autonomy in every second of it. Nobody told him to pull back. Nobody asked him to make it more accessible. And thank god for that.
“Riff Raff” is the kind of track that reminds you what rock music sounds like when someone stops asking for permission.
