Watson Throws Four Touchdowns as No. 22 South Carolina State Routs Morgan State 51-10
Keely Watson completed 27 of 36 passes for 279 yards and four touchdowns without an interception as nationally ranked South Carolina State overpowered Morgan State 51-10 on Thursday night in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference showdown at Hughes Stadium.
The defending MEAC champions improved to 7-2 overall and 2-0 in league play, extending their conference winning streak to 12 straight games under head coach Chennis Berry and strengthening their hold on the Celebration Bowl race. South Carolina State piled up 509 yards of total offense, 296 passing and 213 rushing, while holding Morgan State to 150 total yards and minus-12 yards rushing.
Josh Shaw’s 1-yard touchdown run capped an 82-yard opening drive, and Watson’s 5-yard scoring pass to Martavious Collins made it 14-0 in the first quarter. Morgan State (5-4, 0-2 MEAC) closed within 14-10 in the second quarter on Raquane Matthews’ 10-yard fumble return for a touchdown and Alex Amaya’s 30-yard field goal, but Watson answered with a 20-yard touchdown pass to Troy Hillman as the half expired for a 21-10 lead.
The second half was all Bulldogs. After Jett Jackson’s 35-yard field goal, Watson threw touchdown passes of 10 yards to DJ Maultsby and 10 yards to Shamontae Burgess, Ronnie Robinson broke a 16-yard touchdown run, and Kacy Fields capped the rout with a 28-yard touchdown run with 18 seconds remaining. South Carolina State scored the game’s final 30 points and scored on all seven of its trips inside the red zone.
Fields led the Bulldogs’ ground game with 71 yards on 11 carries, and Maultsby led the receivers with five catches for 51 yards. Morgan State never scored an offensive touchdown. South Carolina State returns to conference play on Nov. 5 against Howard.

Wolfe’s Field Goal in Overtime Lifts Troy to 24-21 Upset of James Madison
Hayden Wolfe kicked a 27-yard field goal in overtime and Troy rallied from a 14-point halftime deficit to stun James Madison 24-21 on Thursday night at Bridgeforth Stadium, avenging last season’s Sun Belt Championship Game loss and ending the Dukes’ 11-game home winning streak.
James Madison scored on its first three possessions. Camden Coleman threw a 2-yard touchdown pass to Corey Scott and a 31-yard touchdown to Braeden Wisloski, and Seth Cromwell ran 14 yards for a score as the Dukes built a 21-7 halftime lead. Gavin Griffin’s 1-yard run was Troy’s only score before the break.
Troy’s defense forced five turnovers and held James Madison scoreless over the final 38:41. Justin Powe intercepted a pass on the second play of the second half and returned it 37 yards for a touchdown, and Jaheim Merriweather tied the game at 21 on a 28-yard touchdown run later in the third quarter. Powe finished with three interceptions, tying a Troy school record set in 1968.
Wolfe missed a 49-yard field goal with 3:21 left in regulation, but in overtime Troy’s defense stopped Cromwell on fourth-and-1 from the 5-yard line, and Wolfe, whose kick was the first made field goal of his Troy career, delivered the winner. It was Troy’s first game-winning field goal in the final minute or overtime since 2020.
Tucker Kilcrease threw for 179 yards in his first start of the season for Troy (4-4, 2-2 Sun Belt), and Merriweather ran for 84 yards on 13 carries. Coleman threw for 175 yards and two touchdowns for James Madison (7-2, 4-2), and Cromwell ran for 135 yards on 23 carries. Troy hosts Louisiana Tech on Nov. 7, and James Madison plays at Southern Miss on Nov. 5.
